ineresting little problem with a d series........ pictures up now
hello all,
im working on my friends 94 ex and it has a d15b in it i dont know d series all that much but i know thats not what came in it. im pretty sure its a jdm motor cause there is no letters or numbers after the d15b. it started throwing a code so she had me check it out its a code 22, vtec pressure switch.
and that was last night so i go to check it today and clean the screen or check the wires and everything like that and the vtec solenoid itself isnt there where it is suppose to be is a plate blocking off where its suppose to be yet the plugs for it coming off the harness are there
so my question is...
1. is it possible that it is a non vtec motor and the previous own not change the computer
2. did the previous owner take the solenoid out or switch heads or something
3. or am i just going crazy? haha
thanks,

I doubt that a nonvtec head would be cast with a port for a vtec solenoid...take a pic of the plate and then take a pic of the headstamp so we know what casting it is

Ya, looks as if someone ripped off the VTEC solenoid. That green plug is obviously its wires.
1)looks like a vtec motor. d15b is jdm, motor definitly came with vtec.
it obviously is has a vtec computer, or else it wouldnt be throwing code 22.
2) looks like the previous owner rigged it up.
3) if she wants vtec just get a vtec solonoid, its easy to do. or if she doesnt care, just toss a p06 in it and be done with it.

i've seen this before (the blocked off port that looks OEM-ish), i really wish i could remember the conclusion we reached
edit:
easy way to reduce questions of whether you have VTEC or now:
are the spark plugs in the front or the back? take a picture of the valve cover. if the spark plugs are in the back, then you don't have VTEC as it makes SOHC VTEC impossible because the spark plugs are in the way. This is the reason SOHC VTEC only works on the intake valves and only DOHC VTEC works with all of the valves... because on DOHC the spark plugs are in the center of the two cams and don't block anything.
VTEC solenoid has 3 bolts holding it on so...

this engine came with a dual carburetor and not fuel injection so it's a block off plate for a fuel pump.
not the thread i was thinking of but, it works https://honda-tech.com/forums/honda-civic-del-sol-1992-2000-1/trying-figure-out-what-head-i-have-d15b-block-1960468/

^^ exactly what I was thinking...
In short, to get rid of the CEL, either install a VTEC head, or install a 92-95 Civic DX/LX (P06) ecu and call it a day.

Ditto what sp00ledbseries, trustdestruction, DestructoEH and turbostd wrote. The block and head are the non-vtec D15B, originally dual-carbureted when driven in Japan. When re-sold in the U.S., these non-vtec D15Bs are modified for MPFI (or DPFI). So your friend's 92-95 Civic EX's ECU is looking for the stock VTEC setup and not finding it. What I would like to know is who sold this car's owner the motor and what was the owner told at the time of sale. E.g. was the owner told a head swap would be necessary if the owner wanted VTEC?
