Default Cobalt XR2s w/street tires HPDE

I'm wondering if running Cobalt XR2s on street tires is a good or bad idea for HPDE?
I hear they are around Hawk DTC-30 level.

Car is 08 Civic Si, TSX front brakes (thicker rotor&bigger pad than Si) with stock Si rears. Stainless lines, AP Racing 5.1 fluid. Basically stock hp and suspension, not gutted, 225/45/17 Potenza RE70s, soon to be 235/40/17 Dunlop D Star Specs.

Car weight is like 2900lbs stock without driver. I'll be taking passengers.

I haven't ran this car for HPDE yet. I am a HPDE 3 level driver. (3 out of 4 group)

A couple other options I have for the TSX front brakes are
hawk Blues 9012 - don't really like the Caustic stuff
Cobalt CSR - replaced the GT sports (1000F)
Carbotech XP8, Xp10 etc.. .
There are others

Reccomendations for a Hefty front pad and streetable rear pad combo would be great.

Thanks
Ryan

I can't provide any feedback on the cobalts, but I wouldn't reccomend Carbotech XP8's or 10's. I ran XP8's in HPDE3 on my 350z last weekend and they were way too grabby for my 275/40/18 Nitto NT05's. My ABS was going crazy.

A few pads I've used with success:
EBC Yellow (good to 950F IIRC)
Project Mu B-force (good to 932F)
Hawk HP+ (good to 850F, little more if bedded properly)

too grabby?
Ever heard of pad knockback with 350Zs.. . might want to look into that. Slightly tap ur brakes down the straights before heavy braking zones.

I used to own a 06 350Z and read up on what it would take to get on the track but I don't remember much of a prob with ABS.

In relation to the new civic Sis, the ABS systems are probably pretty similar but I haven't heard of the ABS going crazy, just that the EBD Electronic Brake Distribution system can sense too much front or rear bias and adjust accordingly. Therefore most likely these cars loose front brake bias if too aggressive of compound is used up front compared to the back which will lengthen braking distances as well as overheat the rears and not allow trailbraking at all.. .

The same may go for the 350Z. Use similar if not the same brake compound front and rear and don't just upgrade the front brakes, upgrade as a package.

I imagine they would be too much pad for street tires, they are very grabby. I like mine a lot.

How do they compare to XR3's?

I ran XR3's on the economy version of the Falken Ziexs last year at VIR full and had a fun time adjusting my threshold braking. Too much bite for economy tires.

I'm no expert on them which is why I'm asking. On the cobalt site they are a higher torque compound so definitely more aggressive

THmotorsports is showing XR3s for the TSX front brakes so I gave them a message to actualy see if they have them in stock. cobalt doesn't list the XR3 compound being available for the TSX front brakes but I know they can make them if you want them.. .

They'll be too much pad for a street tire. For your vehicle weight, the XR3s will probably be ok, might be a touch on the aggressive side.

I agree.

The XR2's are what the Grand Am Cup TSXs and Civic SIs run.

No WAY you would need/could use that much pad.

You would be fine with the CSRs.

I'm thinking the CSRs with Axis ultimates would probably treat me right for the tracks I'll be on. Arizona tracks. PIR, FIR.

FYI Thmotorsports didn't have the XR3 compound in stock for the TSX brakes. On the OE application guide, they don't list it for most of the vehicles as well. Must be special order compound.. .

Thanks guys

Maybe special order for the TSX caliper? I've also had no problem getting them for ITR calipers.

Are the CSRs the new replacement for the GT-Sports or something?

True

About the XR3 compound, I'm just going by what THmotorsports is telling me and what I see on Cobalts availability list. I'm pretty sure they are a build to order type place so it's probably not that difficult to get the XR3 compound in just about any pad configuration.

I think I'm just going to try the CSRs though and not go with a Carbotech XP8 or Hawk Blue.

Also going to use a 245/40/17 Dunlop Direzza SS instead of the 235/40. Hopefully that will be enough tire for the FWD pig :p

I would get some Hawk HP+. I just installed them on my 2000 Acura Integra LS/VTEC with 02 RSX TypeS front brakes and 01 ITR Rear Brakes w/02 Civic Si Rear Rotors.

I'm using Hawk HP+ in the front and Axxis Ultimate in the rear and after driving it last night, I am VERY impressed and cannot wait to get the the car on the track in may and autocross this weekend. They are strong pad even for my Nitto NeoGens. I have Kumho V710's for autocross and the track so it should be a great setup. I tried Carbotech XP10 on last year and they were good, but the Hawk feelss like such a better pad right from the start.

I think you will be very happy with the HP+.

The HP+ is a lower-temp pad, so it would feel better "right from the start" than a pad that requires some heat to get up to operating temp (like the XP10). Once up to temp though, there is no comparison in friction coefficient and raw stopping power, the XP10 would be stronger. Just FYI.

I've used many different types of pads before...
I recently put in XR2s just to see how they worked on the street and Jeebus! they sure work but without a doubt overpowered my street tires! I could induce abs w/o trying and was aggressive enough to dirty/blacken the wheels in 40 miles. I know they were far far from operating temp and that would cause more dust and less stopping power.

I'd would not suggest using them on street tires ON track.

Axxis Ultimates are a wonderfull pad, but I'm not sure about the weight of your car and your driving style... I'd say go one step stronger then Axxis Ultimates. I don't know what would be tho...

Good luck.

Well, the deed is done, the order sent off. I ordered Cobalt CSR pads for front and Axis Ultimates for rear. Also ordered a set of front Axis ultimates for street driving even though I have some stockers to use up but are probably 6-8,000 miles from being dundo.

Also ordered some Rotora Stainless Steel lines, another set of front camber bolts, progress lowering springs, 245/40/17 Dunlop Star Specs, skunk 2 rear camber arms but with custom delrin bushings. Next week will be fun!!!

Still trying to find a used set of FLCAs to install my PIC spherical bearings into along with Mugen rear compliance bushings.

We'll see how these new Civic Si's ***** out with a few tweeks on the track. AutoX in basically stock form with 22mm RSB has gone really well.
