Default ebay bypass valves worth the $17?

i see these things all over ebay...theyre basically just a filter that goes on the intake tube, no actual valve. do you think they work? do you think they let enough hot air in to negate the cold air from the intake? i really dont wanna spend $50 on an AEM one if i dont have to (i know im cheap you dont have to flame me for it).

I'm no engineer but that looks like an air filter so wouldn't that just suck up hot air? It doesn't look like there is any valve at all.

Most bypass valves are filters of sorts, the AEM unit is just denser foam so less air is drawn directly from it than thru the normal filter...
This being said I'd sooner just remove the second piece of intake pike when the weather is crappy or work up some form of a shield to limit the amount of water the filter will ingest. On my civic the fender well plastic was cut out by a previous owner and so the filter was exposed to the elements and the front tire, this lead to the filter getting water dumped on it when it rained and I even had a minor stage of water lock from it on a wet day. Had the plastic still been in place I doubt I would have had any issues...

Those are not to negate hot or cold air from the intake. This is what it says (taken from the link you provided):

A Bypass Valve filter helps your engine intake to have consistent air flow and prevent hydraulic lock. Many cases driving under heavy rain or wet floor, aftermarket cold air intake will often sorb the moist into the filter, having it unable to have air flow. The bypass helps resolve that problem, by having a 2nd air filters.
I don't see how that bypass (I don't get it, why did they call it bypass?) will have any effect on a rainy day.
