My incredibly slow Civic and it's 1/4 mile adventure
Yesterday's track visit turned out to be a pretty good experience.
I finally got a chance to get the car down the 1/4 mile, had a good time doing so, and made the hour-drive home with no problems to speak of.
Upon arrival, judging by the crowd already in the pits, I had chosen the wrong day to come racing, though. :p Instead of a Test-N-Tune, it was a normal race day, so my passes were extremely limited, and it meant I would have to partake in the mind-numbing sport of bracket-drag racing.
After paying my entrance fee into the "Trophy" class (which I had to enter since I was on slicks, thus not eligible for "Street" class), I made my way to the pits, and proceeded to swap out the wheels/tires, raise the car up (since these 24.5"s are HUGE compared to my normal tires), and head on up to the tech line.
As I rolled up to the tech box, I remembered I had somehow (I honestly have no idea how...) forgot my helmet back at the shop. After smacking myself, the tech inspector took my registration card, looked over the car, and asked me the dreaded question...
"So uh, what does she run?"
I looked down at the engine, "JR" logo reflecting the sunlight, and responded.
"Well, it ran mid-15's on the old setup..." :shady: LOL
Waiting for his "Yeah right" response, I clenched my teeth.
"Sounds good! Good luck!" he responded, writing my number on the windshield with a smile.
I hopped back in the car, wiped the sweat from my forehead (...Hey, it was warm out!), and proceeded back to the pits in anticipation of my class to be called for the time trial round.
Finally, the lovely young woman's voice blared over the P.A. system announcing the "Trophy" class.
Here was the result of the first pass:
60ft. --- 1.927
330ft. --- 5.399
1/8 ET --- 8.210
1/8 MPH --- 86.63
1000ft. --- 10.609
1/4 ET --- 12.613
1/4 MPH --- 112.67
The first run was quite humorous from the position I was in. After a very weak burnout on my part (first gear for like, a second, LOL), I launched at 7,000 RPM only be greeted by a copious amount of wheelspin, in which I quickly remedied by letting of the throttle and modulating back into it. That, combined with my inability to judo-kick the clutch and slide my hand into third gear like a ninja on crack, is what I believe made the run so slow.
After about an hour or so, it was time to prepare for the awesome bracket racing competition.
Knowing I had already lied, erm, well, almost lied to the tech guy (it did run 15's on an old setup... Just it was 4 years ago with a stock B16
...), I knew that this was going to be my last pass. I could not dial in anything faster than a 14.0, or the stage assistants would flag me down for stupidly forgetting my helmet, and not allow me to make another pass, and in dialing in as such, unless an act of God were to take place, I would surely break-out.
So, I bit the bullet, grabbed the shoe polish, dialed in a 14.3, and told myself to make this last pass count!:shady:
After they called my class to the staging lanes, I was sitting at the front of the line, idling for about 10 minutes, ready to run. Next thing you know, they proceed to run an entire class from the other two lanes before getting to my class, thus leaving my poor heat-scared supercharged Honda to bake and heat up even more!
Finally, they got through the others, and up I went. This time, went a little better.
60ft. --- 1.845
330ft. --- 5.241
1/8 ET --- 8.014
1/8 MPH --- 89.63
1000ft. --- 10.405
1/4 ET --- 12.407
1/4 MPH --- 112.61
This run started with a little better burnout, so that was a solid start! The launch again once more was at 7,000 RPM, but this time, resulted in a slight bog, so I can only imagine the combination of more heat in the slicks and the heat-soaked engine/blower were the root of that. I also seemed to find third gear a little quicker than the last pass! (Yes, I lift to shift... I am a vagina.)
After that, I decided to pack it up and head home. Maybe in a couple weeks, I'll hit up another track that's known to be a tenth or two quicker, and really get the launch nailed down, and shoot for that low-low-12-second pass!
Here are some pictures from the day:

112mph seems low for that much HP. how high are you launching? get that 60 down and you will have an 11 second car. Just for reference I went 12.2@117mph on 309whp on drag radials back in the day so you have a lot left in it
The car weighs 2650lbs.

You call a mid-low 12 second street car incredibly slow? I sincerely hope there was sarcasm in that statement, because in my neck of the woods any 12 second street car is pretty badass. I'm lovin the engine bay
I'll give it a shot next time I make it out.
Haha, thanks. If I didn't work on/build/tune Honda's all day, everyday, maybe I'd consider writing.
There's a bit of sarcasm in the statement, I must admit.
Although compared to 90% of my clientele, my personal car is the equivalent of a Geo Storm.

bummer you only got two passes in. those are good times tho. you could definitly pick up alot by getting yur 60's down in th 1.6's super clean car ive seen it a few times on k20a
Wow, nice car, man! Your timeslip and mine look like they almost couldve been separated at birth, lol! Not thread-jacking, just sharing a similar experience with you...

This particular run, I missed 4th, hence the low 8th mile mph. And I admit, I lift to shift also, and alot of guys at the track state that my times would go down if I shifted faster. Not making as much whp as you are (stock LS-T, SC34, 14 psi, 304 whp, running 8 psi of pressure in 23" slicks, open diff), which suggests your car (hopefully mine too) has a LOT more in it!
But yes, more seat time, lower tire pressure, higher launch (try 8k) and that high 11 is coming your way! :-) Are you burning out in 2nd? Also, are you rolling completely out of the water box before the burnout?
