Default Rim offset question...

Im looking into some new wheels and was wondering if someone could explain how different offsets effect the overall look. For example there are a couple rims that are the same size but have different offsets. What does this mean really? Or does it only have to do with the wheel bieing further out away from the brakes and whatnot? Thanks

Depending on how the wheel is constructed, offset can mean a different rim lip width, or it could just mean the wheel sits farther out or closer to the wheel hub.

Offset is the measurement from the center line of the wheel to the face of the hub mounting surface. A lower offset will push the wheel out farther, and may or may not have a different lip width on the outside.

Check out the tech articles on www.tirerack.com they have illustrations and such.
