Default How do you tell when your turbo is going bad?

my turbo has little to no shaft play and doesnt smoke at all. but for some reason on the dyno it made less power and spooled up later then a month ago. we checked and we dont have any boost leaks. is the turbo going bad?

Thats what I was gonna say was a boost leak. Or the motor somehow has less compression/intake leak/fouled plugs/ or something strange.

i was thinking boost leak also. the turbo on 18psi made 3whp less then it did on 12 psi a month ago. it held boost perfectly fine and was boosting what it should based on the ebc.

is the injector duty cycle the same or less????

a cracked turbo manifold would also cause that to happen...

Just a thought, but what was the ambient temp at the dyno and was it the same as last time?

Haha.. Hey now.. I run a turbonetics and that turbo has been doing me good for over a year and a half and I run the crap out of it! A Bad turbo to me is a BW and that's what half this board chooses to run

Anyways, definently doesn't sound like a turbo problem to me either, especially without it showing any signs of wear. There are so many things to take into account when comparing your numbers when they aren't back to back but you definently could have developed a leak or hurt something else since the last time you dynoed. Hopefully you find the issue!

Haha.. I do remember people saying that about them back in the day. I definently found a good set up from them, makes more power than any other 76mm on a supra and I have dynoed it a ton, put it on the antilag a ton, run nitrous on it and everything and still not a bit of play, even after a year and a half of torture. We will see how she does this weekend at the event

:'( On my Ebay Turbo (50trim) I make 500hp with a 40shot of nitrous.. Stock Block Stock Head Factory 2 injector throttle body.

But a sign that the turbo is going bad is, look at your boost gauge when your on the track going full throttle if you see the needle of the boost gauge shaking at the desired boost level then yes it's starting to go bad.

i do love the guys over there at turbonetics, just cant put up with all the trama i went through back then to justify to try them again. im in love with my precision joe and harry hook me up with.

turbonetics prolly likes your setup, but id say the new precision 76 billet would smoke that turbo ! lol

Maybe if they changed the actual wheel design on the new billet 76, otherwise it won't make a difference. The pte76's we've dynoed on fully build motors and heads with all the workings made at most 960 std, I made 1031 std with mine on a head that's not ported and a stock intake manifold at 36psi. I will probably make close to 1100hp with this turbo once I add the other stuff, doubt a presicion will make that. I would be lucky to make a smidge over 900 with my setup now if I used a pte 76. Its crazy how good this turbonetics is on my car. They worked hard to develop something that worked good on my set up. We did quite a bit of testing to get it to where it is now. Darin ran the presicion 76 for a while and quite a few seized on him, so he tried a BW, and it made crappy power and was totally lazy and they would blow up after 10 passes. He says now he wishes he knew about this turbo back when he had to run a 76, it would have saved him a ton of head aches.
Either way someone has some sort of horror story with each brand of turbo.
Sorry for all the thread hijacking..haha.. How's the troubleshooting going with thread starter?

I've had my turbonetics turbo on my DD for 5 years running 18psi and nitrous and it's doing just fine.

What kind of oil are you running?
Do you use an oil restrictor?

I know from others ive helped out in the past some who didnt use a restritor ended up having their seals blown, also ive seen the other side where some have used a restrictor and it clogged causing some oil starvation issues and the shaft seizing up..

I know ive heard so many ups and downs from all the different turbo companies that are out there. YOu have to remember every setup is different and will yeild different results. Some having better experiences with certian brands then others and some racers only being "brand" specific.

To each their own, but back on topic..

Id take a quick run through all your parts and make sure everything is fully operational. Try replacing some of the vac lines as well, if something happen to get sucked up in there and clogged a line then that could be an issue.

Is your BOV functioning properly?
Is the diaphram on your wastegate still good?

There are a lot of things that you can check, so just go through one by one..

we replaced the diaphram on the dyno and it made the same power.(low). the bov working properly? what do you mean? it closes full throttle and opens when we let off.
