Default D series tranny upgrade

im running a D16a6 in an ef sedan. my 3rd gear grinds whenever i shift so i want to replace the whole tranny. right now i have an SI tranny for the ef, is there a better D series that will work? maybe an EG si tranny?

im not too familiar with trannies/clutches so please dont hate.
thanks

its a big deal to switch to an eg tranny, due to the hydraulic clutch setup. are you saying the tranny with the grinding 3rd gear is an si tranny? or is that a spare one you have....
an si tranny has the better final drive ratio, so I would stick with that.
the source of grinding is most likely a bad syncro.

sorry, guess i wasnt clear. the tranny in my sedan is an SI tranny, 3rd gear grinds in it.

is an ex tranny the same as an si? or are the ratios different? either way i need to get this replaced or fixed.

i totally forgot about the hydro tranny :-(

Yes the EX sedan has a Si Trans in it since it has a d16a6 this is assuming the trans hasnt been swapped out.

But as said it's probably a synchro. Cables trannys in general are becoming hard to find. You can probably replace the synchro from ~200 bucks. I think thats the quote one of my buddies got for his.Does it grind everytime no matter what RPM?

if i shift slowly it DOESNT grid. but other than that its every time. so my "normal" shifting makes it grind.

since the 1-5th gear ratios are the same on a dx as si tranny, i wonder if you could simply swap out the whole gearset with one from a junkyard... i'm not experienced with transmissions, so I'm not sure if this is a good solution or not, but if thats all you have to do it would save money on buying a new tranny or rebuilding it.

1st 2nd 3rd 4th 5th reverse final drive
L3 88-91 HF 3.250 1.650 1.033 0.823 0.694 2.954 3.880

L3 88-91 DX 3.250 1.894 1.259 0.937 0.771 3.153 3.880

L3 88-91 Si 3.250 1.894 1.259 0.937 0.771 3.153 4.25

the DX and SI have the exact same tranny and the exact same gear ratio but a different final drive? i think something here is messed up.

no, it is correct. just different final drive gear set, for better acceleration.

you might find a cable-hydro kit, but i'm not sure about the clutch needed or the vss - if you can just put the cable vss in or not.

EX sedan came with a 4.0 final drive. oddly. it is NOT the same as an Si tranny.

"upgrading" your tranny is kinda dependent on what you want to change to. higher or lower final drive.

internals are not going to be much different inside, in terms of gearing.

upgrading the clutch maybe more of what you want to do. or lighter flywheel. change will be more dramatic. whether the change is good thing or not depends. i got sick of my stiffer clutch after awhile. but i like my 16lb (vs 18) flywheel from a later civic.

i have a OEM LSD d series tranny for sale. ready to pop in. with a rare and higher final drive of 4.4. it just needs bigger axles and a intermediate shaft, which i have also.

so the higher final drive the better right? (like i said im not good with trannies). final drive is better for acceleration? thats what i am really looking for. I will be stickin with D series, maybe not the D16a6 for very much longer but definately in the D family.

i would like to pick up a stage 2 clutch, i plan on going turbo sometime whenever i get around to it. Let me know whats up with the LSD tranny. May is when i look to buy some goodies.

gearing doesnt change the horsepower of your car. it just changes the top speed vs engine rpm of each shift.

a higher number (shorter gearing) final drive means it will shift quicker. have a lower top speed over all.

like i said, it depends if you think thats "better". some ppl will tune their gearing for each track. or optimize it for a 1/4 mile. or gear it longer for better cruising speed with lower RPM for better mpg. whatever....

This = slower acceleration btw. If your going to have the tranny apart, you should do a bit of research and perhaps get a taller 5th, with a shorter 1,2,3,4. Acceleration + fuel consumption.

for the mpg go with the HF transmission. it sucks for acceleration though.

is the dx faster than the hf gearing wise? i'm getting mixed info here. i'm trying to ditch the HF transmission and get an SI, but if the DX is nearly the same i'll go grab one. there's about three sitting in a junk yard here.

4 spd FTMFW! long gears great for cruising, 1st and 2nd pull really well even with a B1, and 5th is still great for MPG's....even seea few 4 speeds at the drags too
