Default another timing Q

so setting my timing yesterday. first i set the crank pulley to TDC and the cam gear to TDC (this is where i think i might be off by a tooth) start the car and set the ingition timing to 16* BTDC(timing spec for d16z6 from what i gather). so after i set the timing i go take it for a lil ride and when i come to a stop the car dies. so now when i get the car started i have to give it gas to keep it running and when it does idle it will drop after like 10seconds and die. could my physical timing be off causing the car to die? is there an easier way of setting the cam gear to TDC? i cant seem to get it lined up because of the angle im looking at the marks.

you have to loosen the timing belt tensioner bolt, pull the timing belt off the cam gear, set the crank pulley to TDC, set the cam to TDC then put the belt back on the gear. with practice, it gets easier. you may need to use a wrench to hold the gear in place so it doesn't get off TDC

i thought that i had it set like this. if the timing is off just a little would it cause the car to die like that? i just dont feel confident that the cam gear is set to tdc. is there an easier way to line it up than just trying to eye ball it?

eyeballing it should get it right on. if you are off a tooth, it will be noticeable when verifying the setting.

thank you for all your help. is there supposed to be more than set of timing marks on the crank pulley? im just not sure about setting the timing its hard to eye ball it with the way the motor is positioned

you can put whiteout on the tdc marker if it helps you see it better, otherwise, no to the other tdc marks. there are 3 timing marks, the middle of which is red, do not use that when setting tdc.

i was talking about setting the cam to tdc. its impossible to line up the marks on the side to the head. i just found out that theres a mark on the bottom of the cam gear that lines with a peice of plastic so im gonna give that one a try.

so these ore to marks on the pulley right?
- TDC

correct. once you think the cam gear is lined up, tighten the tensioner, then rotate the crank pulley several times to make sure it remains at TDC, say, 4 crank rotations.

i used the 7 o'clock mark on the cam gear and a plastic marker that on the cover behind the wheel, thats the easiest way, rather than trying to line up the surface of the head

to tightened the tensioner, loosen the tensioner bolt, move the crank pulley counter-wise the distance of 3 teeth on the cam gear and tighten the tensioner bolt, i just did that yesterday, its really easy
