an exhaust with no cat...............plz help
Hey I got a 95 gsr in my 95 hatch. I got a 2.25 pipe all the way down with a ES tuning exhaust. I am thinking to toss in a straight pipe instead of my cat. Will I loose power or will I gain?
my buddy said that I will lose power so please let me know with experience
oh yea its all stock engne with just headers and intake

you will gain power.
there wont be anything in the way to retain pressure back.
but the exhaust will get louder.
if you run it with no cat, have a shop put in a resonator.
that'll keep it from being so loud

Running a test pipe does not give you any noticeable advantage unless you a running a turbo. All it will do is make it loud and smell. It increases your hp by maybe .5hp. However, if you are running a turbo, it will increase the power more...

you will not get noticeable gains, the article below explains it...

As restrictive you may think the cat is, it doesn't help any to replace it on a stock engine.
Unless you have Extensive mods, or some type of Forced Induction(turbo/sc),
there really is no reason to remove the cat. Plus it looks like you're in CA, bad idea.

Explain this to me
One of my friends had a LS and another had an 95 gsr 4 door
The Ls with a test pipe took him all day long.......slowly butt took him.
Thats why u putt the stock heatshield over the test pipe to make it look like a cat.
2. The gsr 4door weighs slightly more.
3. The ls engine was in better condition and possibly had more modifications than the gsr.
As stated before, and a relatively stock car, you are not going to tell any difference with or without the cat. BTW it is illegal to remove your cat (not that it stops many people).
ask the OP he will tell you in more detail ho was driving the GSR.
The OP has a 95 si hatch with a gsr that he ran an 15.8... The the guy with the GSR ran an 14.9 in the same car so im pretty shure he knows what hes doing.
Butt why not try it.
If its makes my car """Faster""" for 27$ that its gonna cost me to make a straight pipe then why the heck not..?
7 for 2.5inch piping
10 for flange
10 for o2 sensor bolt thing
=27$
and 20 for a 17 inch resonator to make it quieter.
Yes i know its illegal.

And to say the least, ONE thing that was done differently..
ok so after all that talk(lol) what would be my best choice? headers to cat to 2.25 exhaust to a nice muffler....................right?
I've seen dyno sheets where going from a stock cat to a test pipe gained ~5 horsepower. A high flow cat would be more ideal and only lose like one horsepower over a test pipe, but for the price as long as you aren't scared about emissions I would take it out then later on down the road buy a high flow cat.
is this your first car/"BUILD"??? the stock cat is more than compentent on a cat-back exhaust system. save the $27 bucks and take a pretty girl out to eat. you dont need a test pipe unless your pushing some pretty big numbers. if you decide to do it, atleast keep the old cat, and go to a dyno and try both out to see what you are really gaining and loosing, you can read articles all day long, but dynos dont bull$hit.
a test pipe does make a difference.
look at it this way, even if the power gain isnt big, in your head it might feel like it is which is going to make driving your car more enjoyable.
if your worried about emissons and noise level then yea go w a high flow cat
