Insurance quote
i did a progressive insurance quote on the internet and it came up to under 700 for a 16yr old new rider with a clean record on a 1991 600cc bike. Are the internet quotes accurate and does the rate sound too high?

i wouldnt even bother insuring it fully. just get a nice liability if your bike somehow gets away from you and plows into a yard of playing children (its happened...)
every time a bike does down figure on 1200-2000 repairs minimum... thats what it always is for me.
i've owned about 15 bikes so far in my life.. not one of them insured fully. this is one of those hobbys you need to pay cash for the machines if you can. this is one of those opinionated subjects i suppose...

Progressive just changed a question in their little quote thing from "When did you get your MOTORCYCLE license" as opposed to "When did you get your DRIVER'S license" They changed this sometime in the end of spring or beginning of summer, because I had some quotes done during winter, and for a '99 Honda CBR 600 F4 with a 21 yr old new rider, clean record, it was around $320, but when I got my bike and did another quote, I got somewhere near $600! This is for minimum coverage in California (15/30/5, no comprehensive no uninsured). Turns out that with that one question, they were previously giving the incorrect amount of "riding experience" to you- since I got my DRIVER'S license in 1996, they were giving me 5 years of riding experience. Since they changed the question, they only gave me 1, which is correct. What sucks is that some friends of mine that got bikes before they changed the question are still paying $300 or less
But since you're 16 and I'm assuming that you just started driving, I don't see how that would affect you. But to answer your question, yes, that rate sounds pretty accurate if you ask me. I tried quotes from 21st Century (who I have my Integra insured with), Progressive, and another company who I don't remember. 16 and wanting a 600cc bike? You sure about this? Unless you've been out riding dirtbikes in your backyard since you were 5 I dunno about that.

Anecdote:
Progressive...
CBR 1100XX 33 years old, experienced rider, 1 ticket, full coverage, no crash or anything else:
4700/year (100/300 liability, full coverage, 500 deductible)
Needless to say I did not go with them... nor do I like them.
Check with State farm or Farmers, they are usuallly much cheaper.

allstate was changing their quote policy to go by VIN number and their system said my bike's VIN cooresponds to a ZRX1200R instead of a zr-7s (which is a 750). i just happened to catch it, since the bill was DOUBLE. ********.

I just bought my first street bike (near perfect condition) '94 yamaha xj600 seca II
and my insurance (state farm full coverage) was much less than I thought - only $192 a year.
I have a multi-vehicle discount and I know the seca is a relatively cheap bike to insure, but I was still surprised at it being so little.
