Icon6 First time engine removal

So im pulling my D16 out of my 91 si. Im using the HELMS engine removal on fourthgenhatch as my compass.

Step eight says to relieve the fuel pressure. In the accompanying picture it shows a complete dismantling of the fuel filter and the charcoal canister. The text says nothing about removing the hoses or bolts. Im kind of puzzled, do I follow the text or the pictures?

Thanks in advance

Ok dude easy as long as you have tools. Gonna tell you how to pull with trans attached.

Remove batt
unplug harness either at main plugs or totally from engine.
disconnect batt. cable from starter, remove grounds from engines
remove shift linkage (if 5speed have fun with bitchpin)
remove axle bolts (impact a plus)
pop lower ball joints
remove axles
remove radiator, fan, heater core hoses from fire wall
remove vac. lines from fire wall
disconnect fuel hose either at fuel rail or at filter
hook up engine lift if you have one or get car close to ground if you dont
take mounts loose and pull or drop.

I did 2 engines, cleaned bay, installed one engine all in about 6 hrs on saturday.

All you have to do to relieve the fuel pressure on an EF is unscrew your fuel cap. That hissing sound you hear is all of your fuel pressure going by by. I don't care what your book says. While you're pulling the engine, leave the fuel cap off the whole time, then you wont have a chance to build up pressure. I hope that helps!

there is also a ground wire on the thermostat, if you are taking the entire harness out first, otherwise you should be able to leave it.

No im going to leave the harness for now.

Im kind of stuck on removing the speedometer cable. Im not sure which part im supposed to move nor how I am going to remove it. HELMS seems vague so the picture looks nothing like what actually is.

there should be a clip that holds the cable in the tranny. pull the pin and pull the cable out, thats it

Cool I got the speedo cable out.

I just need to empty the coolant and then i can start tearing apart the radiator hoses.
Since im strapped for time, this will probably be a much longer process than normal.

Thanks for the help!

LOL!!! 6 hours, was it a v8 out of some cadillac? or honda motor, cmon now, if you got the tools and experience it shouldnt take that long, 30 minutes to take it out and 45 to swap it in.

good luck 'kingofnothing'

Its really not that hard, especially pulling the engine. I've done a pull and reinstall in about 8 hours by myself.

I also got around the bitch pin problem by installing a bolt and nut instead. Wrapped in electrical tape to make it snug in the hole. But that's opening up another debate!

BTW, replacing the bitch pin with a bolt made the shifter just a slight bid sloppy, but not a problem for me. I don't do speed shifting or racing.

u dont need to remove the pin from the skift linkage when u drop it..just leave the linkage connected to the tranny, if u have the remove the pin do it with the trans out of the car much easier.

yeah when u replace the pin with a blot it gets really sloppy, when i had a bolt in my old DA i couldnt find third sometimes. the EASIEST way i no of rmoving the pin is with a allen key( HAS TO BE THE SAME SIZE AS THE PIN!, to big and ul make the hole bigger and the pin will fall right threw), get the allen key hold it with some vice grips and hit the top of the pin with the allen key using a hammer and it falls right out. repeat process to put back in ul never mess up the linkage if u use the right size allen key. my .2cents.

another easy method is with an air impact hammer with a conical tip. this makes pin removal in seconds, and also re-installation a cinch. the air tool itself is always cheap at home depot, or lowes, if you have a compressor.

you do know that with an air tool or even a hammer you risk breaking your trans case.

The bitch pin is in the shaft that is in turn in your trans so if you hit it too hard it can crack!

thats why you hit the pin, not the linkage

So I was in the process of taking out my ac unit and im pretty sure i started discharging the compressor.
Does anyone have any experience with this? Its still hissing, has been for about 5 minutes. Once it stops ami good to continue removing it?
