Default Motor is fine cold, but knocks when hot??

Ok guys.. this is kinda weird.

The motor is a D16a6 in my 91 AWD wagon. I blew the head gasket on it, and it sat for a good 6 months before i messed with it. The head was off the motor for that whole period..

When i crank the car up.. It knocks for MAYBE 2 seconds while the oil light is on, then stops knocking when it goes off (2 seconds or so).

When the car is cold, it doesnt knock but seems like it does when the car warms up a bit.. What could be causing this? Ive used a oil thickner, and still does it.

Bad oil pump? The light flickers every so often when the car is warm too. Could be stuff stuck in the oil pickup?

Id really hope its somethign dumb so i wont have to replace the entire motor. These cars are a bitch to replace the motor since its auto and its 4wd.

It sounds like a spun rod bearing to me. I had these same symptoms (oil light, knock when hot and not when cold) in an old eclipse I had, and that's what it turned out to be. From what I understand when you have a bad rod bearing the oil can't flow through freely and it starves the head of oil therefore making the valves knock. So the actual knock you hear isn't your problem, it is actually the rod bearing making the valves knock. I hope this helps.

hmm. Sounds like its coming from the bottom end, not the head.

I'll look further into it. I'll pull the pan off and check the pickup.

rod knock is bad, if its knocking the damage is done you may as well start hunting for a new engine now.
