Default Here's something different: D/B Tranny Hybrid?

So talking to a DSM friend who used to be really into honda's he was saying there was a way to swap B series gearing into a d series casing?!??!! something about the top half of the casing can be swapped or something I wasnt quite listening. But, has anybody ever heard of this before? Because I would REALLY like some shorter gears on my car.

There's plenty of really short OEM gearing options for the D series transmissions. In fact, it's possible to gear a D series tranny shorter than a USDM ITR.

No it is impossible to make B series gears fit into a D series transmission. Unless of course you want to go to the trouble to completely re-engineer the whole transmission. Not worth it.

As Jaker said you can get plenty of short options for the D transmission. Or you can put a CG transmission together and use some after market parts to get even shorter ratios.

Why do you feel you need the special B series magic inside your transmission?

Well mostly because I used to own a gsr and miss the feeling of acceleration a lot, so instead of going through the trouble of doing a b series engine swap, I thought I could do a retro tranny since I have one sitting around. But if it isnt practical then, I might just have to do something else. Thanks tho.

Take a ZC gear stack and combine it with an SI final drive. That will get you a good street gearbox. If you want to get even further out there use an aftermarket 4.5-4.9 final drive and combine a ZC 1-5 for a really high street/race setup.

Well this sounds like what I was talking about. Can anyone else verify?

If you're putting this into a D16Y7 (96-00 Civic CX/DX/LX) gearbox, you won't be able to use the 1-2 from the ZC gearset, as they are an integral part of the mainshaft and the 92-up transmissions use a longer mainshaft/countershaft combination. The 3-5 will fit though, and get your hands on a shorter final drive. The Y7 transmission is 3.88:1 whereas the Y8 and the Z6 (92-95 Civic Si or EX gears and shafts will also fit) both have 4.25:1. Or do like he said and source an aftermarket final drive. I'd caution against going with anything shorter than the 4.7:1 though, because with the ZC 5th gear (0.878:1), you'll be looking at some pretty high revs at highway speeds.
