Default is this a good price?

Ok im having my bottom end rebuilt which includes oversized itr pistons,rings, bored to 81.5mm, micropolished crank,hot tanked, and new valve seals... this guy is charging me $1k which includes parts and labor. does that sound like i got ripped off or does it sound about right? i've been out of the scene for 4 years and I'm just trying to restore my teg.... thanks

Thats about the right price, specially if he's including the piston set. Who exactly is doing it? I wouldn't trust an ordinary mechanic at a body shop to do it. You live in cali already, you should check out inlinefour. They seem like a reputable company.

Does he have quite a lot of experience under his belt? Usually these friend's of a friend's thing don't turn out right.

well a few years.... he built a handfull of motors and they came out clean. including 2 of his own

They are also very pricey. Even the parts they sell have huge markups.

OP, I would contact B19coupe and Combustion Contraption to see what they would charge. There are others here of H-T that are from So Cal but these 2 guys come to mind at the moment.
