bird crap/ bug splats
Keep a small spray bottle filled with diluted soap and water in your glove compartment with a microfiber towel or paper towels. When you see bird crap on your car, take care of it. Depending on your type of finish and acidic content of the bird crap, it can stain the clear coat within HOURS.
Most of the time it usually takes a little while, though. My best friend's black Ford Excursion has had bird crap spots on it that were on the truck until mother nature removed it with some rain and wind and no acid stains were left at all. Some people get lucky. Its just not worth it to take the risk IMO.

There's no set rule for this. Depends on how much protection you have on the paint, how hard the clearcoat is, how acidic the offensive material is, and the amount of time it's been on.
The soap and water/towel idea is good. I always come out with a wet paper towel and get bird poop off as soon as I see it. Regular waxing/washing is your best prevention for stains.
