I have a B20 basemap, and going with a different ECU.

They are BOTH chipped OBD1 ECUs

How do I activate the chip, onto the new ECU?

I can't just drop it in right?

 

If you have the base map (.bin file) burned onto the chip and the ECU is properly chipped, with J1 jumpered. All you have to do is put the chip into the socket on the ECU and your Golf Tango Golf!

 

I keep hearing about jumping J1.

The ECU is properly chipped. But I was told to "jump J1" after inserting chip.
Not too sure how to do this.

 

doesn't matter if it's jumped before or after you put the chip in. Who chipped your ECU? I know I jumper all of my ECU's before they leave my shop. That way if the OP wants to return the ECU to OEM they just pull/cut the jumper wire.

If you look at the main board of the ECU. Find J1 on the board. there should be a 0k resistor or a piece of wire joining the 2 J1 solder points. If it doesn't have this wire/0k resistor you will have to add it in order for the processor to access the EPROM chip that you have your base map (.bin file) on

 

The ECU wasn't jumped by the guy that burned it. But was jumped by the shop that did my swap.

The J1 slot has 2 little prongs coming from it. NOT CONNECTED. Looks just like a burnt fuse (2 metal pieces apart from each other)

So you need the jumper that goes on the two prongs. Available at radioshack, or there's usually extras in PC computers, etc.

 

That's where I get all of mine...being the neighborhood computer tech my customers never seem to miss them

Why are going to a different ecu? What ecu's are you using? My guess is your first one is a P72 and the second one is a P28.

From the looks of the second ecu you are wanting to use, the jumper soldering job looks tacky. Always solder from the bottom, i can tell they tried to go from the top because the big plastic box (DIS168) on the right side of the socket/jumper has burn/melting spots on them.

But yes in order to use the modified socketed rom, J1 has to be jumper or connected together.

 

So to be active, those 2 things have to be connected?
Meaning my first ECU was never active.

My current ECU: P75
My buddy is letting me use his P28 to see if the problem IS the ECU.

Exactly, straighten out those two wires and push on one of those.

If your first ECU didn't have J1 crossed than it was running your car on the stock fuel and ignition maps of that ECU. Not your chip.

So J1 has to be connected? Why are they unconnected? Looks like a spark broke them from each other..

 

Whoever chipped it probably forgot to jump them when he was finished?

It's really hard to tell from the pic if the board you posted whether or not it has any scorch marks on it. but from what I can see it doesn't look like a flash/burn. Looks more like burnt flux or the protective coating from the main board has melted a bit from the heat of the soldering iron.

Damn I cant get a good focus on that darn thing.

 

From what I can see in the pic you posted above of your current ecu. This ECU is not jumped @ J1 and therefore is not running off your SST chip. Meaning your chip wasn't working.

 

so I just need to connect J1 back together with this(picture)?

Doesnt look like it will hold thou. Seems like it will just fall off :-(

For your current ECU you need to find someone (or yourself if you solder) to solder a jumper into J1

It should look similar to this.



This is a P06 so it's not exactly the same as yours but J1 is still in the same spot. It has the red computer jumper on it.

 

Got cha. So J1 needs to be solder together..

And that way, it will run on my chip instead of the virgin P75?
