Exhaust Banging
Sup guys! I just got my greddy se installed on my 09 FA5 and everything seem's to fit correctly but I'm having a banging against the heat shield/dead center of the car where the arm rest is but underneath when I hit a sharp bump! (not quite sure where it's hitting, it happens more often if I have passengers) I talked to my mechanic and he said it was a really tight fit and he tried to bend back the heat shield a little bit with a pry bar and he thought he had it. Anyone run into this problem with a cat-back install? He told me to bring the car back tomorrow he was going to try to think of something to put between the heat shield and the pipe that can take the heat and stop if from ramming into one another.
It may be installed wrong. When I installed my Vibrant exhaust, I test fitted the pieces in all possible orientations before tightening everything down. I noticed that if I had one piece oriented one way it would fit, but it was really tight. I was able to get a perfect fit just by rotating the piece.
Also, Is the exhaust on all of the hangers?

he cant just rotate it like the vibrant.
just take off the heatshield. u dont need it. and it bends real easy so i dont get how he would need a prybar to bend it
I think he was referring to turning the actual adapter piece for the sedan which you can rotate, someone else suggested this to me on 8th. As far as the heat shield, I think he was just using a pry bar as a tool to just push on the heat shield. I thought you needed the heat shield for the exhaust since it get's sooooo hot in that area?? Yes, the exhaust is on all hangar's. When I have a passenger with me it seem's to bang worse when i'm going around, it almost seem's like it's kind wiggling around. I have to call my mechanic in the morning i just wanted to get some informed suggestion's to tell him to look at.
Well i'm not exactly sure I want that especially if I can bang the heat shield around and make some clearence. I really need to get it up on the lift to see exactly where it's hitting. I wonder if the hangar's aren't large enough that it's causing the exhaust to move around inside the grommet's. It feel's like it literally bounces up and down when I go over harsh bump's which causes it to make contact.

That's what R & D is for, so you know the proper specs. Either way, I'm going to take it to an exhaust shop and let them look at it and fix what they have to. It's actually the top of the sedan adapter that is hitting so I'm sure they'll figure out something to fix it. (weld..grind it down..) There's not much room at all under there like you mentioned so rather than bang the crap out of my heat shield I'd rather pay a pro to modify the adapter as needed to get proper clearance.

Do not remove the heatshield without installing some other form of protection!! This heatshied protects your exhaust from melting the emergency brake cable (along with keeping some heat out of the passenger compartment).
I have a Vibrant Cat-back that I was experiencing the same problem with. It has a second resonator welding into it, so the geometry of the exhaust is off a little bit. This caused the resonator to hit against the heatshield. It wasn't noticeable except for when I sat at an idle. Nonetheless, it was annoying, so I took off the heatshield. A couple days later, I went under the car to see if any of the exhaust nuts/bolts needed tightening, and I noticed that the outer plastic covering of the passenger side e-brake cable was starting to melt in a spot. The resonator wasn't actually touching it but it was hot enough to melt it. So, I took my exhaust off and heat wrapped the area. No rattles, no melty, and an excuse to use heatwrap!

I'm deff. not going the route of removing the heat shield to much of a hassel and I don't want **** to start melting. I'm having an exhaust shop weld the exhaust to fit for about $30 bucks which is a great price but still it suck's to have to pay money to adjust a brand new exhaust.
Being that your not driving MY car you have no clue what the hell your talking about. It's hitting the heat shield every time I go over even the slightest bump. If you don't have useful information to add just crawl back under the rock you came out from under.
I think I may just do that, I'm going to jack it up tomorrow and get under there to take a look at it. After talking with my exhaust shop it's only about a 1 foot piece of pipe that need's to be changed. It struck me as odd the way the greddy se is designed, it bend's up at a sharp angle to line up with the cat. Not only does it impede air flow I just thought the design was terrible. (it look's like it could have lined up great without the angle being so to high) Obviously I know it was designed for the coupe and they just threw an adapter in there but it just doesn't look like it fit's GREAT on the sedan. I love this exhaust though!
Look bud, this is a forum and the responses you are going to get will vary. If your exhaust is banging everytime you hit a bump YOU INSTALLED IT WRONG. Im full of useful info on this car, i've been in this sub forum for longer than most other people and have tried more products and put more miles on my car than most of these people, dont ask stupid questions and mabye you will get a helpful answer.
just bend it yourself. Idk what you would expect an exhaust shop to do other than bending it and wasting your money. It's thin enough that you should be able to do it easily.
I had the same problem with my Vibrant header and Skunk2 exhaust. I had to get it modded up. Later I pulled off the skunk2 and the new Vibrant fit just fine. They just probably bent the B pipe a little to close to the crossmember.

Thanks man, I had to get mine modded to. It was harmless and took a total of 10 minutes and if sit's perfect now with plenty of room to spare when I install my header. (i won't have to worry about any banging issue's)
If mine was like that I really wouldn't have minded but it was bad enough that it would bang multiple times during any long/short drive. I couldn't even go over the slightest bump without it hitting pretty hard. I'm glad I resolved it and for pretty cheap to.
