engine block number?
well im about to go buy an engine and i would like to know how to i know the engine is not stolen? is there any website where i put the block number in and it tells me if the engine is not stolen?
I would suggest you contact your local law enforcement. I've never heard of a website that checks engine/car theft like the sites that check availability of special license plates.
Usually the VIN# is stamped on the block. If this VIN# tag is missing, most likely the motor is stolen because they would leave it on (if they had nothing to hide).
The VIN is not stamped into the block - it's stamped into a little metal plate that is bolted down to the block. The block/serial number that is stamped into the block will not help you determine whether the block is stolen as it is not tracked by law enforcement. Bottom line is, if the VIN plate is not present, something is probably shady. Just my $0.02.
From researching this yesterday, I do not think the VIN number is written/attached/stamped anywhere on engine blocks made before about 1996.
My 93 Civic's owner's manual says there are only three recordings of the VIN on it: On the driver's doorjamb; on the driver's side of the dash; on the engine compartment firewall, upper middle.
