Default oem vs replica. how to tell?

I just ordered a "JDM ctr front lip" for $120+shipping. I asked the guy over the phone if it was real or replica, he said it's a real one.. the company seems somewhat reputable as they have a pretty decent website with pictures of their warehouse.. can you tell if it's a fake tho? I'm about to get it in a few days.. I searched old threads and couldn't find the answer. is there a Honda logo stamped somewhere? is it made from special material? thanks in advance

Well, you have to know what the oem really looks like in the first place. Replicas are never 100% accurate, and rarley fit very well. Its like the "JDM" amber corner lights on ebay. jdm corner lights for eg's are not amber and edm tails are not all clear/chrome.

A real lip will have tabs under the lip to secure the lip to the bumper.

It will be in a Genuine Honda box. Part number will be on there somewhere usually XXX-XXX-XXXX or something likethat. Post pics when you get it and we can tell.

From the pics it seems real since it has the tabs for you to insert the bolts and tabs through. If the thing was new and $120, I DOUBT it's real. A CTR front lip is never that cheap unless it's used and banged up. I mean, brand new CTR rear lips are not as high in demand as their front lip counterpart and they already cost around $300. New SI LIPS, which I'm sure is the same part as the CTR lip cost $265 brand new. I'm not sure, just check your box and get for a honda stamped on the back with a serial number. If anything, at least you got a lip with tabs for the bolts, most aftermarket or replicas you gotta drill holes into the lip.

EDIT: I just took a look at the two pics more carefully, they are different lips. I just looked at the new SI lip that I got from HOnda, and it looks exactly like the WHITE LIP in the photo you posted, with the tabs in the correct place. There should be two silver mettalic tabs near the middle of the lip. THe black one, if you take a closer look, the silver metallic tabs are on the side, something I've never seen before...and I've seen quite a few Si lips in my day. A genunine HOnda box doesn't mean much these days, they are easy to print and I"ve seen knock off boxes before. Only way you can tell if its a REAL CTR LIP is a buddy of mine says when you get the box, there should be two zip ties around the entire box written in japanese characters, and he said the lip should have two metallic tabs in the middle, just like hte si lips. Hope this info helps.

The replica lips are "toothier" than the OEM ones.

Real

Fake

Used parts often won't be in Honda boxes.

There are ways to tell besides the box.

Again, often OEM parts do not come in Honda boxes.

Some OEM parts will have a part number printed on them or "Honda" stamped on them. Not all though. The part numbers do not cross reference with the Honda part numbers though. I imagine they are part numbers for the company which produced the part for Honda.

The OP has not posted photos of the lip in question.

Yes, the '99-'00 Civic Si lip is the same as the '99-'00 Civic Type R lip.

I've purchased lips brand new from Honda and they do not have any zip ties on the box.

^^^ I don't doubt this man and his OEM knowledge base haha...but anyway, c'mon NOFX, $120 bucks for a new CTR lip is unheard of. I'm basing this solely on the 2nd image by the way that he posted, which seems to be in plastic wrapping and on a honda box.

I never said it was OEM. It probably is not. It wouldn't surprise me if it is, but it probably is not.

Remember, it's not just a lip from a Civic Type R. The Si lip is the same. The optional '99-'00 lip is the same.

Btw, chapagetti is the guy who made this thread. mechanix619 is the one who posted photos. I mentioned in my last post that they're not the same person.

Lower angle, lighter color and dimmer lighting. It shows more shadows where the photo I posted makes it look flatter. They're the same.

They cost more because people make money because its "Type R."

Do you know that some parts, if you look them up as an Si part (even though they're the same on, say, an EX versus an Si), the Si part will cost more than the EX part?

It's the same thing. Tack "JDM" or "CTR" onto something and it's obviously worth more because it's super cool JDM.

It happens in the US with "Si" too. There is no such thing as Si taillights, headlights or front end (the only difference is the grille).

This is one reason why I'm a stickler for information like this.
