Engine swap on my 92 GSR? Need some advice
Hey there. I just bought a 1992 Acura Integra GSR (the real DB2) for $1200.00. It is in kind of rough shape with 360,000KM on the body, and an unknown amount on the "rebuilt" engine, (B17 Vtec) from what the previous owner has told me..
Anyways, I am currently getting a new clutch installed for $700 flat, and while the mechanic was inspecting the car, he came about what he called, a head gasket leak..
Now, my origonal plan was to fix the head gasket, but why invsest money into something that might have more problems to come? I mean, the previous owner said he "rebuilt" the engine, and is saying its pushing 220hp - which I hardly believe, because then the car would not have been $1200... To be honest, the engine looks just as beat up as the car itself, and looks only slightly modified. So my question to you is, should I just go with a new engine and avoid investing money into this B17 Vtec?? If so, I have been looking at a B16a LS/Vtec engine that is pushing around 180hp or so (which is reasonable) and has about 45,000KM on it - for $1600. I figure if I get the newer engine, there will be less problems for me to fix, since I am only a grade 12 student lol. And as for swapping out the old, and putting in the new, I have a few buddies that are pretty good, and know some shops that will do it for cheap.
I dont know, its hard to say - new engine or no? And if I get a new engine, should it be the B16a LS/Vtec? or something different? Here are some other engines I was looking at, but which one (according to the ads from kijiji) should I swap into my GSR??

Rebuild your B17. It's the rarest GS-R motor ever made and a bit of Honda history.
I would never ever in a million years buy someone else's built motor.
