Six degrees of separation - Civic CRX dilemmas and FAQ update plead. and
This is not techy post, so the lockup is possible, hoverer just wanted to take the opportunity to stir some stuff up.
Dear MODS we need FAQ's updated and cleared of junk (i.e. dead links, and lost pics and vids).
Since we have the capability of embedding/attaching images instead of linking them, we can create permanent guides (until next server failure) independent of photobucket bs and such.
My questions are:
How can we go about it without getting shutdown for redundancy?
Is it possible to assign limited privileges to users to make'em responsible for a particual FAQ category, and have them scavenge for images and relevant guides and info?
Am I just being pain in the butt?
Poll option:
Yes: FAQ's need update,
No: FAQ's are fine, you are just too lazy.

yes faqs should be updated, and in addition the new search feature is among the worst ive ever seen on any forum, the old one was perfect.
Yes, its pretty frustrating when you have to wade through so much gabage to find anything, the dead pics in the faqs, etc etc. The old system worked very nicely.
YES! It is very frustrating when try to read the FAQs. They need to be fixed. Many of us try to help the "new guys" by citing links in the FAQ, but when the links are gone and pictures are inop, it makes it diffcult to assist them without creating an entirely new "How-to" thread. I am constantly reading through the FAQs, trying to expand my knowledge, but it is near impossible now.
As far as the "SEARCH" function, it is practically worthless. I know it has to be frustrating for the internet gangsters, like Sired91, when the "noob" was genuinely unable to find their answer with the "SEARCH" function, and the gangsters cannot (in good conscience) tell the new guy to "Use the SEARCH you ****ing noob!"
Fix the FAQ. Do it, to it.

I hear you guys, problem is that the search function is actually software/script issue, and once the search engine is written, there is not much anybody can do about it, even our mods. And that is simply because they are moderators responsible for content. Technical aspect of this forum are out of their and our reach.
In other words, as long as we are using this vBulletin, the search function is here to stay. There is a light at the end of the tunnel, though. Looks like the next version of vBulletin will have an improved search. We can only hope.
However, by clearing up the content, we might be able to limit the amount of junk that is returned once the query is submitted.

"Tech" related? No.
Relevant to the CRX/EF forum? Yes.
The complaints about the "Search" function are second to the primary issue of our poorly mantained FAQ, which is unique to the CRX/EF forum. I hate to completely lose the years worth of pictures and information. We all want this fixed badly. Mods, you can lock this if you want, but the issue will not have been resolved. Are the FAQs on the other forums in as poor shape as ours?
I am willing to assist.

if links are non-op, then let the mods know. they will fix it.
nothing can be done about old pics that are gone.
the info is still all there.

EF faqs need to be updated and they need to relax some rules for the EF forum. We're different from the rest of the Honda community in my opinion. People make good threads and they get deleted or locked. As long as it is pertaining to EF's then it should be fair game.
I plan on doing a full documented rebuild of my engine and tranny. It could and probably will answer alot of questions for people that have never done anything like that. I hope to have that added into the FAQ later.
So quit complaining and do something. Does no good for anyone to complain if they aren't willing to put the work in to updating the FAQ with new tech. Lately this place has turned into a "hows my car look" or "Where can I get this sticker" most of this info can be found but people are too lazy to find it.
So if you find something then let us know, don't just complain.

Toad has a point. But also, come on, there's a thread in the FAQ with
www.urlhere.com - if this still doesn't work 3/25/2007 it will be deleted.
heh!
Maybe we need a sticky for 'Suggestions of Threads to Add or Remove from the FAQ? Post a link here'.
So people can have a place and say 'Under suspension, the third link down, is completely gone' or 'I have the pics for this thread that are dead, can we get the link remade if I email the pictures'? Etc!

I agree, there is no need to reinvent the wheel. So how can we do this? Is it ok to grab the content of FAQ thread and use it as a framework just maybe trim it down, fix links, etc., and post it? How to keep such thread open to contributions and yet be able to weed out junk? I like the sticky idea.
Also if you find a dead link we need the link, what the title says and who is is posted under. There is still a lot of good info there.
And no we can't give people special rights because very few people take the time to actually read the rules here.

I agree mog I wish I had any pull on the search feature. The mod forum is going crazy because of the search feature and its lack of working. We want it to work just as bad as you guys.
dude i am a mod and another gaming forum and we just leave and get another host. are you guys locked into some contract with vBulletin or what?
dude, apparently you dont understand honda tech is privately owned and was bought out by the company that made this forum script. so its not happening.
this is turning into a IB hate thread, which is going to get locked anyway.
if you have a FAQ or useful, helpful suggestion, PM the mods.

alright, here is an old timer tip for the search, because the old search worked about as well sometimes..
Go to google, and type this:
site:honda-tech.com <searchquery>
for example, if i wanted to search for dpfi-mpfi conversion or swap, type:
site:honda-tech.com dpfi mpfi swap
Then google only returns the hits from honda-tech that contain that query.
As for the honda-tech z*roforum to vbulletin conversion, you can read about what actually happened with that here.. http://mycomputerninja.com/?p=116
it is true that a lot of the old content has slowly been lost from HT, but that is mostly because the links, content, and pictures were hosted on other sites that have since been taken down or moved or worse. vbulletin, for all of its issues, at least allows content to be stored locally, so that cant happen unless someone does it diliberately. The old zeroforum had no way to store content with the thread, so people had to store it elsewhere which for obvious reasons causes a lot of problems, because if the site moves, goes away, or forgets to backup, the content is gone.
as a final note, if you want to start a new faq, start one. If the op ends up being diligent and collecting the links to the first post, in a fashion that tyson did in the old faq, then a mod will eventually sticky it. There is no rule that i am aware of that says you can't start your own updated faq thread, it is simply what thread is more relevent to the time. Ive thought about doing something like that, but for the most part tysons still works well for me.
