Possibly some sort of timing belt problem?
I'm not a real mechanic, but a few days ago I noticed that when I start up my engine, some area in the engine (where the timing belt is) is making some rust loud noises.. seriously you can hear it from a block away and it grabs a lot of attention. It is near 90K miles but I don't want to assume that its only a timing belt problem. It just sounds really rusty when that belt is going around. Also I don't know if its the pulleys making that sound.
Just today, I also heard some rattling noises but its not affecting the engines performance at all. In fact, my engine runs great and has been since I bought the car.
My father told me that this would cost me at least $1,000 to repair with parts and labor, does that sound about right? I see some ads on craigslist charging less than $400.
its a 94 honda accord.
and please don't tell me to fix it myself because its cheaper, I'd rather get a pro to do this than **** it up and spend MORE money to fix that.

Also, when I gas it.. the sound pretty much follows it as well (sounds goes higher when I gas).
The sound fades at about 60+mph when I'm on the freeway but comes back when I slow down.

Rusty? I am assuming this is a difference in our culture for the word "Squealing". If the belt is squaling (high pitched whining noises) put some Belt Dressing on it to quiet it down for the time being. It may need to just be tightened.
Have you had the timing belt/water pump etc. replaced? It is supposed to be done every 60,000 miles. If you ignore this important service, because our engines are Interference engines, if the belt breaks your valves and rods will be bent and basically junk the motor.
Honda charges roughly $800-900 US dollars for the service.

Oh no, I got rid of the squealing problem using WD-40 that was a long time ago.
I don't know if the last owner changed her timing belt.. I bought the car at 60K miles and its now near 90K miles.
Should I just ask my mechanic to look at it to see if it needs changing? I mean I dont want him to take advantage and say.. "Yeah it needs to be changed" when it really doesnt.

Ok it basically sounds like when a railroad train is coming is a stop at a station and you hear the wheels screeching.. thats how it sounds like but not as bad.
well the only thing i could say would be to check the tensioner. or check the cover of the timing belt for scuff marks. also, you could ceck your water pump. i am assuming this is an f-22, so check all that stuff. but if u are taking it to a pro, then just tell them what is going on and they should be able to fix it up for about 900-1000
have you checked your accessory belts? loud squeal at start up is usually from one of those belts being old and worn or from it not being tight enough.

I get belt squealing on occassion when I start my '93 EX, but the sound goes away in < 2 secconds. I've been told that belt squeal on startup is fairly normal, but I'm not so sure about squealing all the way up to 60 mph.
I would take the belts off of it first and spin the compressor with the clutch and without and also spin the other accessories to see if any of them have bad bearings. You can also try pulling the pullies back and forth to see if that doesn't show anything.
