Default D16z6 into 99 civic

My question is what are the differences in sensors between the y8 and the z6 and.....

Can I make the z6 run off of an obd2 ecu without any check engine lights?

I know your going to have to change the distributor to a OBD-II since the D16Z6 is OBD-I. Also you will have to change the injectors to OBD-II as well, I believe the Z6 and Y8 have the same size injectors so you might be able to use them. As far as the ECU you might be able to use a P28 chipped for your engine or even a ECU from a Y8. Dont quote me on any of this. Bump !

I know their is a CFS issue, but if you swapped intake manifolds and used all of the sensors from the Y8, and rewired the distributor to be OBD2 it should run off of the Y8 ecu just fine. Obviously you would need to run the wiring harness off of the OBD2 car as well. I believe that the timing is slightly different between the two, but I don't think this would kill your Z6. Also there is a trick to not running a CFS so that you don't have to switch oil pumps between the two engines. It has to do with jumping the cs wire to the cfs wire near the ecu. Good luck!

you can use your stock ecu to run the d16z6 without a cel light. on the z6 there like 2 or 3 sensor different of the intake manifold. can just hook the y8 intake manifold right up without changing anything

Interesting, could you tell me what that is? Im so used to obd1 engines that I cant put the acronym together lol. If you could post a link or pinout of this process I would greatly appreciate it!

So looks like I need to use the y8 mani, and wire up this CFS thing and it will run just fine on the obd2 ecu just fine on the z6 (without CELS), sound about right guys?

Are you looking to replacew your Y8 with a Z6? If you got the adapter for an ODB1 ECU it would eleminate the Knock Sensor CEL, the Y8 has one and the Z6 does not. And like some of them have already replied the Dizzys will not match up. Using the Y8 Intake Manifold would be better for 2 reasons, one it makes more power and two it would utilize more of the stock harness and sensors.

So if you were willing to spend the extra 200 on the p28 ECU and conversion harness you could roll with out some CELs, you will just need to figure out your dizzy situation and use the Y8 manifold.

EDIT, i see your in Texas and if you put an ODB1 ECU in your 99 that is an automatic fail for inspection. your gonna need to do what i did and find a place to bolt up the knock sensor.

Yeah that is my worry, I need to run a old engine on a new ecu, when they inspect your obd2 car they hook up thier computer to the service connector, so if its not obd2 its a no go.

you have to run the cps(crank position sensor) also bolts up same place as the y8 does, if your stayin obd2 Im pretty sure the p2p will adjust for the timing difference, ive done the swap with no cel and it ran amazing it was just a long time ago, knock sensor is also a must, injectors do switch right over, You will also have to convert or rewire the intake air temp sensor, you can leave the z6 one on the intake mani, or use the y8 intake mani(which is better) and keep the obd2 intake air temp sensor, or extend the wire to the obd 1 sensor, Use your y8 fuel rail also, the egr is on the rail, where as obd1 is on back on Intake mani, Im pretty sure thats about it if I remember more ill be sure to post, Oh there is already a threaded hole on the back of the z6 block where the knock sensor will thread right in

you can get rid of all the CELs using your stock ODB2 harness and ECU, you just have to trouble shoot. my car (96 EX, P2P ECU) has a minime Y7 Block, Z6 head w/ Y8 IM, (dont ask why or how it came like that) and I just went through all this crap. So it can be done, just takes time.

Thanks for the input guys, I don't want to put an older engine in this car, I bought it as a shell but with an engine... that was in the car already, the guy just failed at doing a b-series swap so he said, "f-it" and sold it in pieces, pretty strange, he said it had a roaming idle but from the sound of it I should be able to put it back in without a whole lot of problems! Thanks again.
