crank oil seal
I have read on here about solutions to getting the old one out.
None of them worked for me.
3/4 of the oil seal is metal and the part that is rubber is right up against the crank nose. This means, if you screw a drywall screw or some such into the rubber portion, you really risk scratching the crank.
So, I pulled the entire oil pump.
Thats right, I had to remove the exhaust, oil pan, and then oil pump.
So, I get it all together and guess what, it leaks.
Fust, I am pissed off.
So now I have a question....
Is there really, truly a method of getting that damn seal out without pulling the pump?
Any help would be appreciated

An ordinary liquor bottle corkscrew is highly effective at pulling the old seal out. You twist the corkscrew into the oil seal, turn it this way and that, maybe pry with a small screwdriver (like you say, beinc careful not to mar the shaft), and it should come out fine (albeit destroyed) or, in the very worst case, in a few pieces. It is effectively the same tool as a valve packing extractor, which those who work hands on in power plants know well.
buy urself a seal puller
$14 its works like a small pry. when u go to install it remove the circle tension spring and look at it closely.... find where the two ends meet, and tighten it as much as u can with ur hands, reinstal it, lube the inner lip with clean grease and put form-a-gasket (chlock) on the outter teflon side. line the seal up and gently tap it back in, in a circle motion with a small hammer. be very careful not to damage it. and install so it sits flush with the block
