What kind of problems? Rings from other aftermarket brands are going to be "similiar" as they are sourced from Japan from a certain company.

Have you checked for cylinder out of roundness.

yes, but im sending it to the machine shop to hone it and check it out. i sucked a valve guide through into a piston a while back and bent two valves in the mean time. we pretty much eyeballed it that time at the rebuild. but the walls looked/felt fine

Whose installing your piston rings? Proper clearances? And yes find out with your machine shop to see if the cylinder walls are out of round.

its not the rings... get someone else to build it... it shouldn't have problems.

1. Sucked a valve guide?

2. Check roundness with a bore guage like this

Was the block even machined to this piston set? Sounds like stock bore size with a gang of runout in which "stronger rings" arent going to create a better seal. But if hes done 50 of these then the tolerances for ptw, bore taper/roundness, ect should be right on.

I wonder what you mean by "stronger rings". More tension? I cant imagine this curing any more problems than it would create. If you look at engine development for the last 50-60 years, all ring development has been going in the direction to looser tension rings and finer bore finishes.

Is it the stock bore? I used wiseco pistons on two builds with no smoke or oil burning, but I always go .20 over to ensure roundness. It doesnt matter how many engies you build if you dont check clearences

if he's having problems with your rings, does it really matter the 50 engines before yours? if everything is good the rings shouldn't have a problem... if he cant troubleshoot this simple thing... sorry he doesn't know so much.
