Default 2004 civic dx vp gauge swap problem

I have a 2004 Civic DX/VP (no SRS) and i bought a brand new 2004 Civic EX gauge cluster (no SRS) and i plug-n-played it and it doesnt work. none of the lights turn on when the ACC is on and starting up my car didn't affect anything. And oddly, my dome light blinks on and off. I searched forums and found that someone asked if the 04 cluster can be swapped for an EX 04 cluster. someone replied that it is just plug-n-play.

Does anyone know what might be the problem? I apologize if my posting is in the wrong section I am new to this site. Thanks in advance.

i searched dirtysamurai's pin layout (http://cluster.dirtysamurai.com/) and stinkypinky's (https://honda-tech.com/forums/honda-civic-2001-2005-78/diy-01-02-civic-manual-cluster-03-05-cluster-swap-2204667/) and it's for 01-02 honda's (dx & lx). i sifted through the thread responses and no one asked anything about swapping from the same year civic. I wanted to ask if their pin layouts they provide are the same for all models 2001-2005. . .basically if i did my pin layout the same as stinkypinky's then it would work is my question.

And here is my source for someone on the hondaswap.com website asking if the VP 04' can be swapped for an EX w/ tach and response was "Plug-n-Play"...

::: If anyone can help or direct me to a source that I haven't come across yet I would really appreciate it! Thanks :::

I have an 05 vp. I swapped an 02 lx cluster into it so i would have a tach and it worked fine, so i would asume that the 05 vp is pinned the same as the 02. If that is true you should be able to switch the pins around like stinkypinky did.

so i put in my gauges and connected everything the way it was supposed to. i am pretty sure cuz i triple checked b4 plugging in each wire. unfortunately, my speedometer doesnt work. as in when i drive the meter doesnt move. my RPM...temp and fuel work fine....also..i am not sure but it felt like a drove a mile around my neighborhood to test everything out and if i went over a mile..then apparently my mileage doesnt work either....does anyone know what might be the problem?? thanks in advance.

BUMP.....i re-checked the wires and the #4 fuse under steering wheel which is for the VSS and its fine. my butt connection with the YLW/BLK wire that i had to extend should be fine as i carefully crimped it. i really need help as im sure all can agree that the speed you're going is most important on your cluster....everything is working properly except the spedometer.

does anyone know what else i can do to alleviate the problem or know of anyone who might know? i am new to this forum and don't know any members. any help is appreciated!!!!!!

It has to be wiring, unless the new clusters speedo is bad, but i would doubt it. Id try switching pins around just to see what happens. Make sure the pins in the harness match up with the pins in the cluster. Im assuming your speedo worked fine b4.

thanks mike for your willingness to help. to answer your question, yes my speedo worked fine before the swap. one thing i didnt mention was that when i was putting in my blue connector harness after i completed the wiring, it was rather difficult to put it in. when i checked my wiring yesterday the wires seemed to be in tack and that none accidentally came out. ill go check on it again right now and come back with an update.

also, when i ordered my new gauge from honda i forgot to order the entire assembly (no cluster trim) so i had to go on ebay and order the cheapest gauge set possible. im going to plug that in and see if the speedo works..if so..then it must be my new gauge speedo????

furthermore, my mechanic asked me to bang on my dash and see if my speedo meter moved..i did it today and it does..do you or anyone know what that tells you???

THANKS!!!

wooooooowww! so i plugged in my cluster that i got from ebay..its the red ring version..same kind that i wanted to swap with. only difference is its an automatic..but we all know the wiring is still the same regardless....anyways!!!! i plugged that in and it DIDNT work..well the speedo didnt. everything else worked just like the manual cluster.

ALSO...i checked my YLW/Blk wire that i had to extend..dettached it and directly interconnected the wires and didnt use a butt connector..and it still doesnt work! ! i feel like giving up but i know someone is bound to know whats up.....

i just hope its b4 the 30 day limit to return it cuz i dont wanna be stuck with 300$ gauges for nothing. =/

The speedometer has to be wired up wrong. To be sure, you can unplug the speedo, put a multimeter in the speedo wire in the plug, make sure you have a good ground on the meter, drive the car and see if your getting voltage from the speedo. If you are, then the pin for the speedo ground or power has to be in the wrong location compared to the pin in the cluster. You could also just move the pin to another location, then drive the car and see if it works. Youve got nothing to loose really.

so if i relocate the speedo wire to just another slot and see if it works would it not damage anything? i might try it anyway. plus, just to make sure we are on the same page..the speedo wire in real terms is the BLU/WHT STRIPE wire thats the ECM/PCM-VSS ??? (Vehicle Speed Sensor)
