hey guys. i was thinking of building a motor but im not sure what i want to go with and would just like some suggestions. my first thought was getting an ls building it and maybe later putting it on boost because i hear that ls is a very reliable motor. also because their is no vtec ive heard its great for boost. its going to go in my 97 ek hatch. i believe my hatch is obd2a and ls comes obd2b so ima need a converion harness? also, i should get low comp pistons if im going to go on boost? what all will i be looking at and is it better to go all motor or boosted? just some questions guys.

 

i was just about to do the same and then realized the horrible problems i was going to run into because i didn't have the right tools. so think about that before you go buying a short-block. IN THE LONG RUN, in terms of only money, it is just easier to buy one. unless your a huge pimp and own a snap on truck or something. or don't have a dead beat dad.

 

is u dont have the tools dont do it but is pretty easy, but if your going to boost just for street use and nothing crazy like 400hp ur good with a stock ls just make sure you get a good tune

i picked up a b16a2 complete short block = $100
1000lb engine stand used once = $25

thats all i have right now. you DEFINITELY need the right tools. like i didnt have an air compressor to remove the bolts so i just used my socket wrench. ALMOST EVERYTHING was a b*** to get out!!! especially the crank!!!
yes you would need low comp. pistons if you want to boost.
and its up to you what you get. boost or all motor.
you will be driving it so its your own preference.
i am doing boost. so im getting low comp pistons, eagle rods, ARP head studs, ACL bearing, etc

I would say boost it and tune,therefore if you don't have tools/don't know how,don't do it take it to a performance shop.

 

i think all motor is easier to maintain. since on boost you HAVE to be in strict oil change schedule. and you should get an oil change every 2,500 miles. to ensure that the turbo charger doesnt get oil grime.

you dont have to take your engine to a machine shop, you can do everything yourself.
but its recommended that you get the block honed and bored so you can have fresh cylinder walls. and for that, you will need to go to a shop
