Trying to decide which clutch to buy. It's either the Exedy Stage 2 Cerametallic (thick) or the Competition Clutch Stage 2. It's for a Stock GSR with Basic Bolt ons. But, I'm Going to boost it within a year. (reason for the stage 2) so far. the Exedy runs for about $400 and the Competition clutch runs for about $350. Is Exedy worth the extra 50? or does Competition Clutches work just as well for less.

 

i would say go with exedy i had that on my turbo eg it was good.

Exedy are good clutches, but the engagement is too harsh. Competition and ACT are arguably the best clutches made up to date. I would look into the CC stage 4, 6 puck, sprung. It is a great street clutch, supports the boost very nicely, and its a great feel with great, yet not harsh of an engagement.

A stage 4 for a street car sounds like some major over kill. For basic bolt ons a stage 1 is plenty still get the same stock drivabilty with extra bite. How much power are you planing to put down once you boost and is it gunna be a street or strip car?

 

Exedy Hyper single stage 3 is a good NA-FI transition clutch (200-350hp)
I've never witnessed any slippage, even on high-torque supercharged applications.
Engagement is quick, but nothing a crafty driver won't adapt to easily.

 

The "stages" have nothing to do with overkill...different stages just means different options. The stage 2 exedy is horrible compared to a stage 4 competition. Its much harsher, and has more chatter. The stage 4 is the best choice for the street. If you need to have more "bite" just get an upgraded pressure plate with it. My stage 4 Comp is extremely easy to drive on the street, supports more than enough power, and has that bite when you need it.

My friend on the other hand, has an exedy, and his car feels like complete crap. When it grabs, it grabs really rough, and is annoying driving it on the street. Not to mention the exedys pedal feel is horrible (very soft, which gives off the impression that its not grabbing) compared to a bit harder pedal feel that the Comp has.

What people consider "overkill" is the pedal feel. Unless you get an upgraded pressure plate (which is the part of the clutch that gives that hard pedal) you will be fine with any clutch, if soft pedal feel is what you prefer. Speed Theory and most major shops in the east coast always recommend the Comp stage 4 for any street applications, and thus far it has proven superior to almost every other clutch. From NA to FI, you cannot go wrong with it.

Another good choice is ACT. They have 6 puck clutches, sprung, with upgraded pressure plates for great prices. They are a bit hard for the street, since ive driven a couple of my friends cars, but they grab nice. The more pucks, the easier the engagement and the harder it grabs. Compare the Exedy 3 puck to any other clutch using a 6 puck, and it will be like night and day. For OEM replacement type clutches, i believe Exedy is the best, but for mildy built motors and cars that put more power to the floor, you need something extra. thats where Comp, ACT, and Clutchmasters comes into play...

im using the CC stage II clutch kit with their 11lb flywheel in my B20/GSR tranny ls and I love it. Stiff pedal feel and great grabbing power

 

i just need something that will hold about 250 LBS torque.

 

oh, and this is for street.

 

Yea the comp stage 4 holds that and plenty more so you have room to upgrade your motos without the need to replace the clutch...best choice i think

 

I had an Exedy Stage 2 on my boosted GSR (315whp/216wtq) for two years. I ran it at the track several time and put over 18k miles on it after two years. When i took it out, it looked like new. I have a CC Stage 4 now, but can't really give you a good comparison. All i know is i loved my Exedy 2

 

exedy ftw, never tried cc either though.

 

I just installed a comp clutch stg 1.5 aka "exedy smoker" holds 285 ft/lbs. A little stiffer than stock pedal presure but it grips like a sob. I did the cc clutch and act prolite fw in my 98 gsr and i love it. The cc clutch also uses a organic disk like a exedy.

 

I run a Stock type R 2001 clutch kit for 4 years ago and drove it at the track 15 time by seasons.
just slip it last season once wen trying to burn slick on 2nd gears.
But waz ok wen cool down
It's my daily driven car. also in winter
And still runing 1.77 on 60Fts box in my Integra
