There's plenty of research you can do to find the answer to your own question. Nitrous will get you the most most horsepower per dollar. You could also do the infamous LS VTEC conversion. That conversion will probobly run you a little more then 1,000 though.

Just brace yourself, for people are going to tell you to search, or that you didn't provide enough information such as your goals or if it's going to be a DD etc... Just look at the dyno graph on top of this section. Although the older dynos graphs don't show, they still talk about what upgrades they did, and how much hp/tq they got out of it. Then when you see the parts that you're interested in either look at the market place on this website for prices or look online. Don't forget to calculate labor if you're not going to be
doing it yourself.

There's even a 1.8 non v-tec thread floating around here that has a lot of good info. Check that out as well.

I'd say put a Vtec head on it. Most noticeable safe mod. But it should not cost you over $1000 unless your not putting in the labor yourself.

I vote for an ITR/B16/B18C transmission.

I didn't even think about the transmission aspect of it. I definitely agree that a trans swap would benefit you greatly. Probably the most reliable upgrade you can do.

Man...this guy is asking what he should do with $1000 and completely leaving the question open-ended....

You really think he has the tools & knowledge to do an LSVTEC? Pull your head out of your ***, Man.

I'd almost recommend Nitrous or a homemade turbo setup....but we're back to the knowledge issue.

Not to mention, he asked this question in the All Motor forum.

If you're just looking to add enjoyment to driving, I'd go with Clean Rice's suggestion of a VTEC transmission....especially if you can find a trans with an LSD. You'd need more than $1000....but it would be very worthwhile!

You just asked if he had the tools and knowledge and now your telling him to drop his motor and pull the tranny???????? Also I'm sure its a DD for him so A B16 would not suffice on the Highway unless he put an LS 5th in it. Again, Vtec head $500, B20V conversion kit $200 (golden Eagle w/ hG), then pay someone $300 to do it or read one of hondatech tutorials and he could save the $300. Its really easy to do.

You don't have to drop the motor to replace the tranny. A trans can be done in a few hours.

B16 Tranny with a light flywheel. Thats your best bet.

PLus you can sell the LS tranny and recoup some cash

I agree with the tranny upgrade.

Dont put a VTEC head on a "stock" LS block. The LS internals have to be properly set-up to "reliably" rev to the VTEC powerband.

I paid 800 bux for a GSR YS1 ranny with Quaife LSD

i loved it when i installed a b16 tranny to my STOCK ls. you will run out of mph a tad quicker but the acceleration is night and day IMO!! you dont need a lsd. there great if you do some kinda racing but if you just drive on the streets there not as needed. if your in a teg you will get better traction,a hatch not so much

Lets break it down. He could do everything and still be under 1000. And a ls can run 8k all day I took my dd turbo b20vtec to 8k every day for two years at 340whp so I think he will be fine.

b16 head with manifold re use the ls seniors, t/b and header 300
Sell the ls head for 100- to 200
golden eagle lsvtec kit 150
gsr or b16 tranny 500-700
sell ls tranny for 500
ebay clucth and flywheel 300 xtd
and a p72 for 100 lets add it up
comes up to 1450 now sell everything comes out to be 850. Thats what I would do but then again I can do all this my self in a day so good luck.

Wow!!! I am going to have to mark this on the calendar... I agree with kidd...

A b16 trans and lighter flywheel will get you moving. You will think you added quite a bit of hp. For the $1000 that is what I would do.
