sounds like its wired wrong to me.
maybe someone had wired them funky before u got ahold of ur car.
is it possible that your brake lights are actually wired to your parking lights?
i mean it sounds stupid but thats what it sounds like to me lol

If you screw the 1157 tail/stop bulb in upside down,
It will burn the tail and brake light at the same time
when the lights are turned on...
It doesn't really fit that way
but I have seem people force it in anyhow..

having this problem right now, lights are in fine. lights worked earlier today, now they're not working. the light in the hatch works fine though, just the sides don't light... checked fuses, wiring, etc etc. any light on the subject? heh.
Check the fuses under the hood.
I pulled the horn fuse under the hood to swap my steering wheel(I did not want it honking at me). When doing this I noticed when I pressed the brake pedal, the tail lights would not illuminate and my seatbelt warning and seatelt warning lights would come on. Weird if you ask me.
After putting the new steering wheel on then plugging the horn fuse back in... everything works fine.

fixed my problem. all fuses were fine, the problem was the sockets had seen the good old midwest humidity for 20 years and were rusted and corroded to hell. after some sandpaper and some new bulbs they work fine. wires and sockets need to be replaced, but electricians tape is just as good right now. hopefully this helps someone.
