LS/Vtec Stock Internals
Absolutely. Over the past five years, I've built many ls/vtecs in a stock configuration. The keys are to keep it within reason! That means, keep revs down (7500 MAX on completely stock bottom end, 8200-8500 with arp rod bolts and acl trimetals), don't go with large cams (valve reliefs in the ls pistons won't accomodate vtec sized valves), have it tuned or running on an appropriate map, and make sure you have proper assembly practices with the oil supply and head plug.
I've built many ls/vtecs that had no issues whatsoever, and in my opinion ls/vtec is one of the best setups to build period. Great for the budget and great for power.
I personally ran an ls/vtec with arp rod bolts, acl trimetals, and a Cometic gasket with a GT3082R making 379whp revving to 8500 with no issues at all. The people who state they are unreliable are those who either have never had one, who never built one, or acted carelessly in owning one.

i too have had great success in putting these things together. i love em. best bang for the buck period end of story. strongly suggest ARP, GE, or AEBS headstuds and ARP rod bolts. take it to 8200 rpms all day long on a stock head. if you have the means to run some nicer bearings, do so. ACL Race, or Clevite H bearings. stay away from POS king, topline and acl duraglide bearings.
you can always upgrade the valvetrain later and a stage 1 cam wouldn't hurt. get it tuned and rev it as high as power is possible. and have fun with it.
