Ignition timing adjustments
I have a b18a1 Freshly rebuilt with 10 miles only on it. Timing belt cam marking everything is on correctly as i done it on an engine stand and at first start attempt engine roar to life and warm up and idle perfectly at 800rpm.
My question may be weird or not sure if it is normal as it need to break in first but i dont think so.
Anyway what can be causing my motor or whatever not to be able to time the timing correctly at 16?
I have a 1991 ls and i jump the service connector and then move on to checking timing with a timing gun (ADVANCED MODEL) where i can dial in to see it.
Ok I just advanced my distributor up toward firewall maxed and it still only at 15 sometimes at 14 degree? WTF!!
Then if i then turn off engine and go unplug the service jumper and reset ecu and start the motor up and check it, it is reading at 12-13 degree which is rich isnt it?
Well when i dial the gun in to TDC the reading on the gun only reads 12-13 degree WTF?
My old motor didnt do that and i am using the same distributor. Both same
B18a1 motor from 91-92.
I am not throwing any CEL or bogging or having idle problems. Only thing i have in it is a 10 lb flywheel. and normal bolt ons.
Car idles just like yours and run like a champ i bet but havent get to beat it as i need to break in clutch and engine.
So please someone explain to me what is going on?
I also have a b16a obd0 distributor that only fit 1 bolt ok and this is extra spare laying around and so i grind off some more of the bolt area so i can advance it up to 18 degrees.
I use the b16a distributor to test it and it does advance to 18 degrees fine.
Now this is weird if the original LS distributor cant advance it anymore does that mean the distributor housing sensors or something is out of specs for it to act like this? SOMEONE please!!!!!

Sorry but i am not going to take off everything again to check. I know its dead on because the motor was aligned by me with the engine off on the engine stand. Beside the black cover holding everything on the timing belt side has been seald completely off with gasket maker and i dont want to take it off. You cant go wrong as timing the timing belt and cam marks on an engine stand and then rechecking it with a stick in the spark plug holes and turning the crank many times to double check. And again it cannot jump a tooth as it is on tighter then spec as it will expand overtime.
Even first attempt starts up after i finished it. even the slightiest mark off you will have idle, blog, sputter problems believe it and i do not.
If my TDC is off my car would probably run funny. Its perfect as if its ur car runs like new car with perfect non jumping idle. With it maxed advanced its roughly at 15-16 degree which makes it doable for cali smog. But its just weird coz later after smog i want to advance it to 18. Only way to advance it is if i grind down the distributor bolt hole some more so it can be advanced. I know this coz i have a spare 0bdo b16a dizzy and i did it with this one.

Well I wasn't doubting your work. But if its not coming out right then maybe you are doing something wrong. Good luck to you cuz it seems like you need it
