Cheap homemade build???
Well i know this has probably been covered a 1000000x times. And if i do get the answers im hoping for then i'll go for it because theres a town from me bout 10 miles out thats pretty much a HUGE junkyard and i get most of my stuff for free there. OK I was wondering if theres any way of stacking up some more HP by basically mixing up honda parts? by this i mean switching my b16a camshafts/gears with GSR gears/shafts. or another example would be switching out intake manifolds/throttlebodies with GSR manifolds/TBs. OR maybe even using different companies like Mistubishi to do the frankenstein idea?
would this just be a retarded idea lol?
ive thought about it for a long time and i have no resources to tell me if its not a good idea so thats the sticky situation.

well at this junkyard they keep alot of the good-working stuff. its not like a small junkyard lol it goes on for miles so they got alot of stuff. ive seen a couple of projects where ppl swap out different stuff to get more power so im just bein curious
if you could find gsr cams that would be a slight up grade, definantly noticeable.
i would get a cheap ls block, no matter year, and build it in your spare time then put your pistons and head on that block and swap it into your crx. but you have some reading to do.

no it would go down. their is a compression calculator in the faq's section of the eg/ek forum.
get a ls block. You are already very setup to go ls vtec and can probably build one for less than $700 and can expect hp numbers in the 185-195 range and tq around 135.
but then you need to learn how to tune and it will be free, or buy hondata and convert to obd1 and have a shop tune it. that would be another 500 minimum.
read. learn.

185-195 for a stock ls/vtec? wow. thats pretty good, considering all the ones i've seen built only put out around 160 give or take a few. but anyway, yeah gsr cams will pick that thing up pretty decent. get a b16 transmission, cam gears only help if your building your engine, imo anyway. they would be a waste of money on a stock engine. chip your ecu, header, full exhaust, high flow cat/ test pipe, you know the drill. all the bolt ons. it'll be a fun ride thats for sure.

well heres my setup as of now.
JDM b16A, DC 4-1 header, AEM short air, Apexi N1 catback exhaust, im not really sure what the clutch is but i do know that it kicks back on me alot so it feels like a racing clutch....if it goes out i have a stage 3 fidanza clutch/flywheel for it.

not sure what kind of budget your on, but you could always upgrade the cams even more with skunk2, or crower. what are your plans for the car? drag, road track, just a quick street car to woop up on the local mustangs? you need to consider that too before you start getting into internals and things like that. boost vs na?
things you will not find in a scrapyard include,
brand rims,alloys,
good looking decks,
nice leather seats,
a battery,
performance parts,
B,K,H,R SERIES VTEC ENGINES!
you might find it there but trust me it wont be in the car nor will it be available for a part out atleast not to the point where you can just take a cam or tb LOL!
dude there is a database these guys use, even the smallest, oldest scrapyard uses www.car-part.com type databases to know the value of what they have and wouldnt take too long for them to figure out that gsr's and sir's are valued like crazy!
you will need to find a scrapyard that has no idea about this database(not gonna happen), that has no employess under the age of 35(not gonna happen), that has no acura/honda owners in that town(yeah right hahah!), that has no swap shop (if there is a scrapyard there is a swapshop) HAHAHA GL!

well my best friends dad owns the junkyard...thats where i got my racing seats from. came out of a trashed integra. i paid like 50$ for them. and i also got my d15 block from there for under 100$ after i threw a rod in my 89 crx.
the way im getting these parts is not of real importance. im just wondering if im able to kick up the power by swapping out honda stuff.

my plan for my car is just to be a quick gas saver. like any other honda guy wants from his car...gas mileage but also as quick as it can get...to a certain point.
again this is just an idea and im sure lots of people have thought of it before. just never had any real knowledge of how to do it

Not sure about the b16's heads but if you can come by a Gsr head take the internals as the intake side is dual valve springs. Also gsr cams will give you a little more pep but you cannot use a gsr intake on any of the other b bseries head as the bolt pattern is different. GL on what you find and if you start to build it start a build thread!
well you havent given us any measurable goals, like what kind of mpg do you consider better than an already very efficient yet powerfull b18c1? the thing gets 30 mpg in an heavy *** dc2 yet go to 60 in 7 seconds what more do you want, if you want better mpg than that youll have to get taller gears, less weight, less dissplacement, leaner tune.
see IMO opinion your crx(assuming from your name) being a light car would work amazingly efficient with a second gen d15b vtec(none as sohc zc, but dont forget 2gen so like 96-00) you can do some research on this engine by simply typing 3 stage vtec d15 on yahoo. its out of the ek series an used in the asian market, its pro's are it can run on 8 valves at below 2200 rpm and cause a some spinning effect to the air and run a lean mixture at that point for max efficiency than after 2200 it hit its med efficiency range by running on normal a/f ratios and 16 valves and theen it hits the high lobe vtec cam at 5200 along with optimum hp for a tune giving the best of both worlds

i agree taking the gsr internals from the head will give u a lil push but nothing noticable.....also the cams from the gsr have a a bigger loop on the intake side so that lets your motor run high rpms while still be able to breath easy you wont be able to hear your vtec go off.....i personlly would save and get some toda stage2 cams and supertech vavle train then you would notice some gain....
^ Cannot hear vtec crack? are you out of your mind lol. i can hear it pretty damn clear on my rex. lol or try and find some type-r head internals in which case are dual valve springs on both intake and exhaust side and lighter valves...
ok well i was thinking about buying those skunk2 b16 camshafts but i donno if it would be worth the 300$
what im trying to do to my rex is just create as much power as i can while staying under a very tight budget. im not trying to make a monster out of it or shoot nitrous thru the block. im just wanting to see what i can create out of day-to-day parts.
maybe someone has already done that and they got a set-up they can show us?
