Last week my timing belt snapped in the parking lot of my apartments on my 1995 Civic w/ a B16A2. I brought it home and have put another timing belt on it hoping there are no bent valves b/c it was idling when the belt broke.

It seems to have 4 even compression strokes so I am pretty sure the valves are ok. It will crank up and run but it runs poorly. It is like it is struggling to run. At idle the vacuum is at 10 mmHg rather than the normal 20 and if I let it idle it cuts off after a couple minutes.

When I put on the timing belt I made sure the "Up" arrows on the cams were both pointed up and that the arrow on the block was lined up with the line on the crank gear.

I need some help on what I need to adjust. Keep in mind that the last belt snapped so things could have come out of line. The only thing I can figure is may be the ignition timing is off but I need help.

 

Bent valves for sure man. Sorry to break the news to you. Check compression just to double check though.

 

Yeah, I was sorta guessing it was. It just seems like it wouldn't have four compression strokes if it had bent valves.

 

The valves can be bent and the vehicle will still run, but not very well. I've had cars with bent valves and they idled like a beauty, but get them above idle and they just fall on their face.

Yep, definitely got yourself some bent valves.

Unless you didn't put the timing belt on right, and got really lucky when it snapped and didn't bend valves.

 

If you are truly positive timing is spot on then yeah. You didn't hand crank the motor after you put the belt on to see is timing was still ok like you are supposed to?

 

yeah, the valves were fine. I got damn lucky. I just hadn't got the timing spot on...off by one tooth.
