Default Buying a new ITR shortblock for use with a GSR head/cams/ecu

Hey Guys/Gals...

Alot of you will ask why, well my 49,950 GSR engine is toast. Let the bidding wars
for slag begin. Any advice on break ins and techincal pointers will be appreciated.
I am looking forward to what this engine will be able to produce down the road!
I have my GSR intake manifold secondaries ported and enlarged for more flow
up top. I like it very much for the midrange it is capable of outputting. I plan to break the engine in with the stock HG, I am expecting a CR from 10.8-11.0:1 on this setup for baseline. This car is my daily driver and I want the motor to last a couple years. I do plan to modify it in due time to the 200+ whp range daily driven with good MPG and reliability being my goals. I estimate this setup will yeild
150-155/118-125 on the wheels with 110-115 @ 5252rpm baseline factory
settings until broken in and tuned. I will retain the use of my 98 ITR axle back,
fresh air modded stock airbox and comptech filter.

I am transferring my ITR/portflow springs and Skunk2 retainers over to the new 01 12K head with the GSR cams and cogs. We are installing ITR LMAs, a Mugen Thermostat and Fan switch and ARP headbolts/stock HG. Replacing my rear engine mount will be next as well as installing my ES inserts that I have yet to install. I have yet to know what to do concerning the oil cooler it comes with, I know I need to get the lines to make that thing work. Maybe I will spring for oil temp and pressure gagues as well. I want to do an ENDYN/Moroso catch can setup also, still kinda unsure on how the GSR head with the ITR block with the GSR IM PCV valve will end up working. I figure this will be a good investment to start with. I have an ITR flywheel which I plan to have cleaned along with a possible new ACT SS disk and bearing while apart.

I will run base timing, I/H/E until I can justify purchasing a full exhaust system which I want to do something along the lines of the full Hytech 2.5" setup. After this will come the JDM ITR tranny. At this point, I feel low 14s would be expected. Upgraded cooling, 11.5-12:1cr on pump gas, Skunk2/2 cams, fpr/rail/injectors, ECU and head porting adding flat racing valves will be next. Within a year to 2, I should be in the 200-220whp in 1.8L form 13s daily driven with mostly full interior
in a streetable, trackable, FUN NA ride

hypothetically what I might have for sale... unless I choose to retain my parts for
a project car 85mm 2L build in the future,

somewhat gauled 98CTR/01ITR cams, I will be researching if these are saveable
I will be selling em. When we plastiguaged them the bearing journals were still in spec. I have Skunk2 gears to go with them, one of the gears has 2 bad fasteners which can be fixed. I would like $400 OBO for this cam setup

My P72 head:

bearing journals are crap, can be welded and align honed. rockers and GSR LMAs are somewhat worn 50K I also have the GSR cams/cogs that it came with for sale.
$200 OBO

My block:

GSR flywheel and shortblock will be available. The damage sounds like the
bearings are badly toasted. The engine saw 8-10K accidental downshifts
about 5 times in its life. This finally caught up to me with the increased cylinder
pressures I was running. $400 OBO

anybody have a $800- a grand to blow on a project B18C1 motor?

I know this is the tech board, some of you might be searching on this topic and find this useful anyway.

Thanks,

Mike

Do you have a picture of the items? Interested in perhaps the block but would really want to see the main caps, crank, and especially the journals

How much did the ITR shortblock cost. I'm planning on doing the same with my B16 engine. Well it won't be a b16 after the swap. I found on price of $2200, I have not yet priced it at the dealership but let me know what you paid.

Yea, I am hopeful at this point for the Rods, Cast soundness for a sleeved project and/or someone willing to build an engine for a few passes at the track and then blow it up for fun hehe... I dont know maybe I am exaggerating. I have the somewhat gauled journals on the CTR cams which I think can still be machined into spec. The stock cams are perfect. The head more than likely is toast unless you are a machinist and want to practice welding/align honing.

I was quoted $2800 for a new GSR block from the dealer which I was able to get the ITR one for, hard choice NO? this is for a block that is fresh from the factory in the sealed box. the GSR head is used but I bought new valve stem seals and my mech will clean the valves and re-lap them in for me. I have the ITR lost motion assys $285 with tax and I bought new timing belt, tensioner pulley, valve stem seals and ITR 11 (ITR 10.6:1 heat range is 11 GSR @ 10:1 is 13) OEM NGK platinum plugs with the cooler heat range. I plan on putting this back together with the stock HG, my ITR intake outer springs, portflow inners and my skunk2 ti retainers. all in all, I think this setup will be very nice for a while. I ordered a mugen thermo and fan switch also from Inline four which will keep the heat down to a minimum. We plan on running the water cooled oil cooler and I ordered the ARP head studs also to help keep things together.

for baseline power, I am expecting 155/120 with 115 at 5252 on stock I,H,E, ECU, GSR cams, 0,0 and 16 timing, 10.8-11:1 compression.

Tomorrow night I part with my like new Nikon F5, 80-200 af-s and 17-35 af-s F2.8s and TC-14E teleconverters for the $3000 from a dealer to finish the build up.
I go into this on Friday when I get the car towed to my boy Chris' house where the TEG will be de-vtec-ed by 12:00am. We hope to have the slag motor out and ready to drop in the happy one by mid saturday, first startup on sunday evening!!!

longterm plans: road course/auto-x/street/occasional weekend drag

goals:
OEM/ITR looking yet trick TEG
2500lbs wet
0-60 in 5 or under
average 1/4 acceleration 13.5 all day on street tires
eye popping brakes
racing seat
well tuned chassis/susp

a more detailed post will follow:

status report... we got the engine in last night at 2:30 and cranked her over.
priming the fuel and oil made it easy, then the plug install... started right over.

things we found that sucked:

blown C1
13K HD/SS ACT clutch inner disk spline worn to hell UNUSABLE!!! < GETTING $$ back! HONDA OEM DISK MATES TO AND IS NOT WORN OUT BY INPUT SHAFT!!!@@#
A Portflow Inner valvespring broke... hmm what could this have done to my motor?

AFTERMAKET PARTS... not happy, need to learn more about the good stuff

anywhoo... I have pics the whole way through... and when I can I am definately making a website for anyone who wants to see.

thank youz:

God
Chris Camilli ASC/Honda Master Tech: for 30H of tireless work
Colin Bergey: for the use of his car and moral support
Pop From All Version: for the Block and Head...
Don Bergey: for sale of camera
Bill Greenwood: for purchasing my camera
Clay Palmer: (ILUVTEC) busting my ***** and pitching in
Ken Ostrow: for stopping by and helping out clay bust my *****
Trey Holmes: for supervising and lookin like puff daddy
Franick & Melanie: for helping and hangin out

The motor is very tight and torque-y still doesnt know itself yet
so I am driving it bet. idle and 6K varying cylinder pressures
and rpm: trying not to drive it the same at any given time.
We started at 5-30 castrol GTX. I plan on using it for 1K and then
switching to amsoil 10-30w. We feel the 0-30 is too thin to make
a dynamic wedge and can shear honda bearings. The only prob
I have is a idle that fluxuates and an occasional 14: (idle system
malfunction) other than that ... no worries.

More to come

Mike

750 miles and going strong, no leaks no problems other than my idle is
riding between 1500 and 750. It only seems to sit down when it is really
hot outside. Other than that, it feels great.
