Engine Died while in 6th gear doing 70 mph...help
Posting for a friend...he has a 2000 sk2 and he was driving on the highway in 6th at around 70 mph when the engine suddenly just died on him...
it wouldnt start back up, so he got it towed to home and to say the least was very upset last night.
he got it started this morning and noticed a small knock coming from the engine...so he shut it off and checked his oil level, and sure enough he was about 2 qts low...he filled it and let it warm up and the knock went away...
the question we have is...is there some kind of switch/sensor on the F20 engine that kill will an engine if oil is low to prevent damage? We wanna beleive that an oil change will get him running straight again...but i thought id check with HT first...

is the car throwing CEL? did the oil light ever come one, because if it did damage has more than likely happened.
seems odd the car would cut off in 6th...was it at high RPMs? i could see lack of oil pressure and the car cutting off...

the CEL was is on for a previous issue(evap can), i told him he needs to get it rechecked to see if more codes are present now...he said the low pressure light was never on...i personally dont own an s2k but id think 70 mph in 6th gear wouldnt be considered high rpm on that vehicle...
the CEL is still on? have him find out what codes its throwing before anymore possible damage is done...he can take it to autozone, DAP, etc... to find out
He should not have been trying to start the car before he know what was wrong. That was just stupid... I don't think it would have been, but was the car in vtec when it shut off? Only being 2qt's low is not that bad. I mean it's horrible, but not blown engine horrible. I don't believe it would have caused the engine to stall like this.

does 6th gear @ 70mph=vtec?
i dont think that the call stalled for oil reasons either, but either way it stalled for some reason and we cant figure out why...

I had a friend that ran his 2000 a little low on oil and got a slight rod knock. Eventually his motor went toast.
It's tempting but when a car suddenly dies like that it is usually best to not try and start it. I know of people that have had timing belts go and immediately shut off the engine and not have any issues. Whereas if they would have tried to start it again they would have messed stuff up.
Go buy a $70 code scanner (I wouldn't drive the car if possible) and see if any other codes came up that he wouldn't have noticed since the CEL was already on. The code scanner will pay for itself after a couple of uses.

Find out what the CEL is for and go from there. You can use the paperclip method, you don't have to spend the $$ on a scanner.

coil packs don't last forever, that would be my guess. if you have access to another S try swapping those. I would think you would get a code if they died but maybe not.
check crank angle sensor or cam angle sensor i have seen the same problem on other car as for the coil packs theyre indivual like a spark plug or injector so if one went out you would get a cylender misfire
I think the car would still run (badly) if one coil pack went south.
I like the crank angle sensor suggestion.
