Thinkin of puttin some mods on it. Any suggestions? I'm new to this whole car thing.

 

What are your goals?

Speed? Handling? Aesthetics? Track? Street? Show?


Either way you look at it, the D16y7 is complete garbage for anything other than a good economy daily driver motor or swapping the head off for a d16y8.


Trust me, my EK Civic is D16y7 powered, its slowwwwww.

Do an oil & filter change.
Learn basic DC 12 volt wiring, and secure the vehicle with a brand-name reputable warrantied 2-way paging alarm, as well as a redundant kill switch or two (starter kill, main relay kill, fuel pump kill, ignition kill). Do not continue until at least one fourth of this step is complete.

Install a decent stereo head unit the correct way (conversion harness soldered to Kenwood/Sony/Alpine/etc. harness, heat shrunk and/or taped), and perhaps replace the front speakers with a modest aftermarket.
Convert to manual transmission if not already performed, assuming you'd be comfortable with manual transmission. This, however, requires a bit of wrench time and may not be something you jump right into.
Proceed to buy decent tires, or wheel and tire combinations, and replace worn out suspension components such as bushings, tie rod ends, ball joints, perhaps even struts or springs.

Decide if you would like more power:
A.) Swap on a D16Y8 head, with ARP head studs and a Cometic head gasket, as well as a P2P ECU. ($250 to $350 depending on where you buy the head)
B.) Downstep to OBD1 and turbocharge your motor. ($1K to $4K)
C.) Run a small (35 to 50) shot of nitrous oxide, kits are typically $500 give or take a few hundred.
D.) Swap in another motor, whether from an Acura Integra LS, GSR, Type R, or Honda Civic Si or similar. Check your state's emission laws, you may be able to have a Japanese market motor in your vehicle without worrying about failing emissions (do annual emissions exist in your state?) This can be anywhere from $500 to $4000.

I listed such a broad range of things to do as we are truly unsure what you want to do with your car. Check the Appearance Build Threads board on the site to get ideas. You could even proceed to just daily-drive it 'til it throws a rod, then keep going.

I was talkin to my other friend who knows a lot about cars and he said its a scam, but I wouldn't think my other friend would do that.
It's his old catback from his car because he just bought a new one.

dont buy $20 cat backs. I wouldnt do anything until you read this forum for like a month and search online, magazines, etc. Learn as much as you can before wasting money. First impressions and impulse buying is bad. Waiting a while to see if you really want/need a part is very good.

First thing you should do is fix broken parts or anything worn out with OEM HONDA parts. Yes it costs money, but it will pay off a year from now when you dont have to redo the same thing again. Do a full tune up like they mentioned. Buy some good quality tools. If you dont have a tool buy it. Buy a Helms manual for your car or at the least a Haynes.

Its very easy to F up a car, but it takes time, money, and planning to make it nice.

 

the 20 dollar catback is my friends old catback. it used to be on his honda.

 

Unless its a nice name brand system hes just giving you cheap, I wouldnt buy it. Slapping stuff on there just to have something. Plus stock D's with cat backs usually dont sound too good.

if you want power go with the turbo, ive got a D16y7 turboed and its a good reliable DD and will hang with the best of them. You could go the N/A rout but its a lot of $ for not that much power. if you want to go for looks, start by lowering it (you said you did that good work), rims thay dont have to be expensive, keep an eye out on craigs list or forums, and tint (make a big difference in how it looks). If you want power and you dont want to drop much $, its not going to happen, sure you could put the intake on, and the exhaust but you wont feel much power from it, but they will make your car sound better. Hey if you like the way your friends exhaust sounds get it its $20 thats a steal. I dont know your skills when it comes to working on cars, but if you have to know how to put a turbo kit on i would go the rout.
