1996 accord speedometer replaced !
Does anyone know if the speedometer and the computer are linked together
like a serial number or something ?
Here's the problem.
About 6 months ago the speedometer went out, and I simply replaced the entire cluster rather than mess with the original.
I just got 2 error codes namely P0171 and P0401 which are covered by the extended emissions warranty for this car.
Apparently that extension covers emmission items up to 14 years or 150,000 miles, and Im wondering if I shot myself in the foot by replacing the entire unit.
The car had approx 127,000 miles on it, and I replaced it with a higher mileage unit by approx 3000 miles.
The car now shows 132,000 miles, below the 150,000 mileage limit, but is that something the dealer could dispute, and if so how would he even know.
PS I guess I could always put the old one back in, but really dont feel like going through that hastle again.
Thanks for any info.

No, the speedometer and the ECU is not linked together, in that they know it's a different speedometer.
If you had wanted to keep the original odometer reading, you could just swap the printed circuit board on back of the speedometer.

Here is a thread how to replace the circuit board.
