i've had a dealer run a diagnostic test on it, but they didn't trace any problem codes. so i dunno wat else to do....i've already changed the fuel filter & plugs except the air filter. should i change the air filter in the air box? i dunno if the last owner has changed it when i bought it.

Change the air filter. Change the oil and filter as well. This may not do crap for your problem, but it's good maintainance.

Now, if the "check engine light" is coming on and being triggered by the ECU, it will store a code. If the dealer has jumpered the service connector, and there is no code, then I can't think of what might be the problem (or for that matter why the engine light is coming on).

You sure it isn't the oil light fluctuating on and off, or maybe the battery light? (red lights versus orange lights).

"Diagnostic Test" from the dealer eh?

Did they put it on "their machine" too? Dealers kill me with that crap sometimes. There's no wonder machine to put the 1992-1995 Hondas on that will tell them the problems on your car. All it is for a check engine light is a $8.00 jumper plug tool from Honda or a free paperclip looped.

What my shop does is check the car out by having a tech drive the car and then from his 10+years of experience working on the cars he can usually get the problem knocked the first time. If for some reason he can't get it figured out (rare) then one of the other techs with 10+years will step over and rest assured the problem is fixed. Two guys at my shop have been doing Hondas only for 20 years!

Usually the problem with your dealer is that they have younger, less experienced techs that are used to the new school way of plugging in a scanner tool that tells them the problem on the 1996-up stuff, and they haven't seen enough cars over the years to draw comparisons top other cars that had similiar problems. You're lucky if you get their "one guy" that's been doing Hondas forever.

The other problem is that their prices SUCK.

Read that link and you'll see how to check your own check engine light. You simply find the little blut plug that might still be stuck in the green rubber thing over by your ECU on the passenger side floorboard, and run a looped paperclip into it and then count the flashing lights where the check engine light is.

How many miles are on the car?

I'm guessing it's an oxygen sensor code - very common for 100,000+mile Civics to have an o2 sensor crap out.

Good luck, and keep us all posted.

im gonna change the air filter soon and see wat happens. maybe im not gettin enuff air flow. as wit the light fluctuation? it's orange....the light tends to go on when i'm drivin at a normal speed of about 70mph on the fwy. and sometimes it doesn't!!

as wit mileage. it just hit the 200,000 mark. and i assume the cause of it may be the 02 sensors. i'm gonna change that as well....

anyone know of a place that carries 02 sensors for a reasonably dirt cheap price?

O2 sensors are too expensive to just pop in "just in case" so just use the easy methods described and check the damn ECU codes being thrown!
