Default does your car do this ? RPM Jump?!

I have a 94 del sol si with b16 DOHC Vtec swap..

The car shifts and runs fine until i shift to 5th gear and the rpm jumps to around 5600 sometimes higher and stays there ... is this normal ? Is it ok to run the car at high rpms for an extended period of time ?

Help ? THANKS !

5600 rpms should be in vtec for a b16. does your motor go that high or is it just the tachometer showing your that high?

i guess that is vtec kicking in .. but only in 5th gear ? The car will run at much higher rpm's.. but i was just worried that somethign was wrong because it really only jumps that high when i shift into 5th ... and then if i stay on the gass it will climb .. but i hear a diffrence in the engine when it does jump.. alot louder ...i was afraid of burning something out if i continued to let it run at such a high rpm.. the tachometer shows it that high and i believe it is running that high.

That's the short gears of the b16 tranny for you.

Does it jump higher? If you're doing 5600rpm in 5th, whats the rpm's in 4th AT THE SAME SPEED? If the rpm's are lower in 4th, then you're either shifting to 3rd, or whoever you got the trans from somehow changed the gearset for 5th. Otherwise the B16 trans is known to have very short gears, especially if the final drive ratio was messed with.

yes its usually lower in 4th gear , and jumps to around 5600 and i stay on the throttle it will continue to climb... is it ok to keep it in such a high rpm?
