Low Oil Pressure Indicator... Are my friends crazy?
The other day I was out shopping for a new honda accord with my friend. the big decision of the day was 4cyl vrs 6 cyl. Once we got back home, we convinced her husband into letting me test drive his 2001 4cyl Accord Coupe Automatic. He was reluctant, but agreed. Both were present for my magnificent test drive never exceeded 50 mph, lasted for 6 miles, and included a ninety degree perfectly apexed turn at 44mph (which did not even break the wheels loose) Yet, lo and behold, the low oil pressure indicator lamp appeared (little alladins type lamp, in red). It stayed on. We stopped, we checked the oil, it was fine (last oil change two weeks previous)....is this post long enough?...Everything was fine, its still fine, no engine noises, no exhaust discoloration, no seizing of motor, no oil loss. Light still on....So out of an abundance of caution they stopped using the car till they could get it evaluated. They brought it to their private mechanic who specializes in Hondas. They kept it for 24 hours, did $97 dollars worth of diagnostic on it, they said that the sensor got interrupted by an accident or dramatic manuever and did not reset...My pals say I should pay for half of this bill (only half because she is taking half responsibility for having the idea of me using his car for a test drive)....Is this even about hondas?...Anyway, did they get clipped in this process..and am I responsible for a crisp manuever in their Accord. I'll pay the $$ either way...I just want to be right....

The oil pressure switch just crapped. It was going to happen at some point. But it did happen while you were driving it recklessly.
Pay up.
Pay up.
Thanks for the sound moral guidance. Yes, I shall pay. It was not a "reckless" drive, and it was one very smooth turn. The balance of the 6 miles was normal city driving whilst we ran errands (grocery store, gas station, pizza) I could see how the light would go on if the car was running on two quarts of oil during that ill fated, perfectly executed $97 turn. But why would it stay on if there was no pressure insuffiency? Did my turn, offend their sending unit or circuitry? Yikes! I'm just thinking about all the wild back country EVOC manuevers in my 1998 4cyl DX in the last 11 years without ever seeing that little lamp. If one turn can light up that warning when there's no apparent problem, and then stay on when there's no problem....wasn't something faulty beforehand? Irregardless, I shall obey the code of the road and cut loose the cash. Its only money....if you see an uptick in the economy, its just me opening my wallet. Thanks again for your thoughts.
