Default intake "box"?

Okay, when I was trying to install the cold air intake for my car (ended up not fitting anyways) I had to take out that huge, seemingly empty black box that connects to the filter and runs to behind the headlight. After finding that my intake didn't fit, I put it back on because I was afraid to leave it off not knowing what it was.

So... my question is... what the heck is this thing? Some kind of silencer or just an extra defense to keep debris out is all I can think of... I can't remember if there were any sensors connected to it... but if there isn't... would it be wise to take this thing off to probably get the same performance gains and sounds that you would from a short ram intake?

Its a resonance chamber. Creates vacuume so the engine has more suction or something like that.

Yes and no. The resonance chamber on the D17 is primarily made for sound reduction so removing it just makes the engine less quiet, but certain intake manifolds on performance built engines are designed to use the resonating frequency of certain rpm ranges to help funnel more air into the cylinder head as the valves are opening. The D17 doesn't follow that type of design, as it's intake runners are designed around consistent air flow with lower emissions and fuel usage.

So if I take that thing off will I get the same sound as an aftermarket intake? I know I obviously wont get the same performance as a ram air intake just cuz I won't be able to get as good of a filter for the box. I find my car to have alot of road noise already so I don't want to take it off only to find it only makes an annoying droning sound, I'm looking for a louder, more powerful, rev sound... if that makes sence

It might sound similar, but it's not a fantastic sound to begin with.

Well, considering you wouldn't see any performance gain from a cold air intake anyways, you'll see similar results from removing the resonance chamber.

If you want a more "powerful" sound, change out your header and exhaust. Removing the intake components will make the car sound throaty but somewhat annoying.

Keep in mind, that the sound won't change how weak the drivetrain is performing. Basically, it'll be like a dog without teeth.

So basically the car will sound better if I leave it in? I heard some people saying that getting an intake makes it sound kind of better, but better to some people is annoying to others (including myself)

I enjoy the sound of a Real APEXi N1 over a cheap Magnaflow can if that gives you any idea of my engine noise preference...

Umm... well "Real APEXi N1" mufflers are no better in quality than Magnaflow mufflers (which are by no means "Cheap" in comparison), but I can understand the point you're trying to make.

And, in all honesty, even a standard cold air intake really doesn't sound that great.

Alright, well I guess I'll leave that 'ish in then, haha.

On a related topic...

I've heard a few different types of exhausts and my favorite has to be the APEXi N1 both in looks and sound. I heard a Dynomax muffler with a glasspack that sounded real nice before too, but it looked cheap and diddnt seem to even fit the car right. Aside from those... I saw this boosted sedan with a custom exhaust by some Brazillian company that sounded insane... but I'm not even going to try to get that stuff imported, haha.

Just a quick question on that note... do the sedans and coupes sound any different if they both have the same setup? I'd imagine they'd sound slightly different just cuz of the lengths, but is it noticable?

The lengths are identical. The wheel base of the sedan is identical to that of a coupe, and the exhaust tunnels aren't varied either.

Wait! Then that would mean cat-backs from a coupe would fit a sedan? If that's true... I've been very misinformed... 'cuz a few people have told me that coupe cat-backs won't fit a sedan.

Both the coupe and the sedan have a wheelbase of 262 cm. You can find that info. in the FAQ's. The only suspension difference between the chassis styles, is the rear spring rates.

I have my resonator off right now because I didn't feel like putting it back on after hunting for my PCV valve. Sounds like **** and the car feels sluggish.

I hate to break it to you, but when I first dropped my K24 into my car, I had an '05 RSX Type-S exhaust on my car.

To be honest... I miss that exhaust. It was so nice and quiet by comparison. I like the new exhaust note, but the silence is nice every now and again.
