Default Need Help with Brakes

Ok. I do not know if I'm just imagining this things but, when you are at full stop it feels like the brake pedal is going down and its kinda soft.

My brake pedal is kinda low, I checked and I do not have any leaks on 4 calipers is there a way to adjust the height of the brake pedal?

Thanks!

A fading pedal with no external leaks is usually a master cylinder bypassing internally.

There is no way to adjsut pedal height on your car. With rear drum brakes, adjusting the rears can make the brakes engage sooner, feeling like a higher pedal.

You may look at the condition of the rear pads. If they are very low, sometimes can give you a spongy feel, but will not cause it to fall to the floor.

I would first check that you didn't run the Brake Reservoir dry and start sucking air. That would give you the spongy pedal.
IF (on the other hand) the fluid was not completely depleted, your Master Cylinder is failing and will shortly not have a pedal at all.
Replace said Master Cylinder.

Could be a master cylinder, try flushing and bleeding the system first. Excessively worn pads will cause a low pedal, but sinking generally means a bad master, or air in the system. Other possibilities are the brake booster push-rod being out of adjustment, a faulty booster a vacuum leak or the one way vacuum check valve for the booster.

don't waste your time flushing and bleeding ,,,,,your brake master took a dump replace it then bleed the system , (make sure to bench bleed the new brake master cylinder before you install it)

I sent the car for a brake flush to my mechanic and also have him replace the right rear caliper coz. that thing is very rusted and the ebrake on that part is not engaging due to rust.

Anyway the replacement caliper broke while I'm on the freeway and I have brake fluids all over and I drove that car with barely brakes in it and the brake reservoir dried up and I have to stop at a gas station to refill it. It is not entirely dry.

I told him the problem is and he replaced the caliper and bleed that side for air. And everything is ok except for that spongy feeling.

Do you think I can just flush the brakes and this would disappear or I need to replace my master cylinder?

What happens if the master cylinder fails while I am driving, no brakes? or I will have some form of brake but not much?

How much a master cylinder cost ?

It sounds like you've still got some air in the system. That's giving you the spongy pedal. I'd still keep a foot out for the master cylinder tho. If that pedal was creeping for anything other than the leak, you'll be looking at no pedal (no brakes) real soon.

Hey Paul,

Is there a way of confirming that its a problem with the master cylinder, rather then air in the system? Is a bad master cylinder something you can test for or physically see?

just keep pressure on the pedal while stopped with the engine running. if the pedal begins to sink the master is toast. air in the system will not cause a pedal to drop.
