Default 1988 Prelude tranny fluid

Hi, I have a 1988 Prelude Si i think, well it says si on the back anyway, and it's looks alot older than it is, and performs as if it's been run through hell and back (well, alot worse than my '90 camaro) and another big problem with it is it's slipping auto transmission. Someone told the previous owner that if I changed the transmission fluid then it would ruin the transmission, I personally can't see any way this would be possible, this is not true correct? Also, I know it needs a tranny change/rebuild along witha long overdue fluid change, but is it very difficult to replace the transmission in this car? I wouldn't be afraid to perform such a task on my camaro because i know much more about those types of cars and configurations, but i'm not sure about these sideways mounted engines/trannys. Thanks in advance guys, any help is gladly accepted.
