Default Got a CEL, but can't check it.

I have been driving and I notice after a quick run with my slipping clutch I get a CEL and the 1 and only other time it happened was after a normal ride, now when I restart the car it disappears. It turns on randomly. I do have my emergency brake light on, but that's because the wire isn't plugged in. Could that be causing the problem?

Thanks you guys.

Jump the service connector to retrieve the CEL code. It's stored there even though the CEL doesn't remain lit.

Okay, thanks.

I just didn't understand your terminology there.

So it's stored there even if it's not showing on the cluster?

Thanks Ron.

If its showing a code when the engine is running that disapears if you shut the car off and restart it. Wait until the code reappears, with the engine still running jump the CEL connector and check the codes.

Generally, if the CEL turns ON and then later turns OFF, the CEL code will remain stored in the ECU. If the code clears by itself, then there might be an intermittent short in the service connector circuit or a bad wire in the BACKUP fuse circuit.

That really hasn't been my expirence. I'm not saying that something like that has never happened, that just hasn't been my expirence. I've seen numerous 5th gens throw codes that would disappear if you shut the car off and then restarted the code would disapear with no codes shown when the ECU was jumped. Backup fuse was always good.

Yeah, I can't argue with experience, which is extremely valuable. My statement comes from experiences with my 6th generation Civics, as well as a description for how the CEL code system works in the available 5th generation Civic service manual.
