MY g/f has an 02 Civic LX. However I broke her only remaining master(black) key. We lost her other master(black) key awhile back and as of tonight have started to use the valet(gray) key. We tried to get a copy made at Wal-Mart but was told it has a chip in it. What do I do? He says he can make one to unlock and lock the doors but not start it.... He says if we lose the valet key then we are in big trouble cause we will be stranded and screwed. What is he talking about? There is no alarm or any type of antitheft device that we are aware of. No door lock/unlock remotes and such. What do I need to do or how do I get a proper key? Will a key cut at walmart really not start the car? If this is going to require a dealership then how much would I be looking at? Thanks to anyone in advance. I'm just worried since my g/f frequently locks her keys in the car........

 

A Wal-Mart cut key will not be able to start your car, as there is an Electronic Immobilizer in the ECU and it's matched to the key's signature. You have to go to the dealership to order replacement keys. I don't know the rough cost, but it won't be cheap.

 

theres a small key symbol when u turn on or off the car. its in the instrument panel. i also lost all my other keys n got one made that only opens the doors. a locksmith could get a master key for you for roughly 100 bucks.

 

You have to have a locksmith make it. Mine got thrown away by my girlfriend last year and I had to have one made. He makes the key then he has to program to the key. To have two keys made cost me 170.
