your opinion on toyo proxes 4
well i got some new wheels and suspension for the summer so ive bben looking at different tires and my local belle tire guy offered me some toyo proxes 4 for my crx. (15" 6.5 wide 34 offset on d2 coilovers) most likely going to be riding pretty low this summer and i heard different tires can make or break dumping your car. just looking for some opinions on the proxes 4 for my crx slammed. college kid working full time so it seemed like a cost effective solution for tires.
It's a fairly cheap and okay all-season tire. It's a good choice for the size tire you need - 195/50-15 - because the best all-seasons aren't available in that size anyway. Go for it!
Actually, they're probably even better for the OPs needs than nsxtacy stated. They have an absurdly soft sidewall, which helps with ride quality on stiff suspensions (actually why I bought them). The downside of this is a very vague steering feel and lack of responsiveness to steering input.
Otherwise, they're acceptable tires. I have some wet traction issues, and they've gotten rather loud at half worn, but nothing outside the range of "normal all season tire" levels.
2000 GSR, 2 years on Proxes 4, about 20k miles, no real complaints.

Since you don't have to worry about snow or frigid cold where you live, you can get MUCH better grip (on dry pavement and in rain) and handling feel with summer tires, such as the Yokohama S.drive. The OP needs all-seasons for year-round use in his location.
I can't complain about dry traction with the Proxes 4, as they perform how I expect cheap all seasons to perform. Love the Kumho Ecsta ASXs on my girl's A4, much better all season tires, and they're good for trips into the snow.
Only the wet traction bothers me, and braking in the wet seems adequate, but trying to accelerate from stopped in a puddle has been problematic. I actually got stuck on an onramp, during the first hard rain of the season, because the car couldn't get enough traction to avoid sliding backwards down the ramp, even with full brake engagement.

I don't know what tires they are being compared to for them to have "absurdly soft sidewalls" or its an issue with the size you have but I have Proxes 4s on my 02 Miata (205/45/16) and they completely changed feel of the car from its OEM Bridgestones. They are MUCH stiffer and more responsive than the old tires. As for an in general review I think they're pretty good overall especially if you need all-seasons. I'll probably get another set when these wear out. I don't know if they'd have as much dry traction as you'd want on a Honda as I've never driven anything else with them. It doesn't take much to have "enough" traction on a Miata...

For example, in 205/50-15, the Kumho ASX is $66 plus shipping from Tire Rack, and $78 with free shipping from Discount Tire Direct. The Proxes 4 is $75 plus shipping from TireDeals4Less.com

Too bad for the OP that the ASX isn't available in 195/50-15.
However, you'll still get better grip and better handling, at roughly the same price, with very good treadlife, from the Yokohama S.drive summer tire than with either of these all-seasons. (Which doesn't have the downsides of short treadlife and poor rain traction of the Azenis.) Again, not a good choice for the OP for his winter use, but in SoCal, try the S.drive and you won't go back to all-seasons.
Bob_760, sidewall comparison was with Falken Ziex, Sumitomo HTR, and Fuzion ZRi, which is what I could manage to talk the wheel shop into a package deal on when buying wheels, and was done by hand flexing unmounted tire sidewalls. They were the easiest to flex by hand. My suspension isn't kind on passengers, so my primary tire question was "what produces the softest ride quality on my car?". And yeah, I know I should just use 14s with large sidewall tires to get the same effect.
They felt softer (while driving) than the OEM Bridgestones, but I had Azenis on the car in between, so driving comparison was a bit biased.
Nsxtacy, I've edited my previous post about pricing.
And thanks for the advice to me, but with me averaging 8k miles a year, and all auto-x and HPDE miles on different tires, I won't need new street tires soon enough to look at recomendations now. New tires will be available before I need to look.

well right now im running sumitomo htr's on a set of 13" wheels (nto steelies) for winter and there grabage, im also on h&r race springs to but camber isnt too bad but the sumitomo htrs wear fast. maybe its the way i drive but my front tires lasted me about 6 months from brand new to tread showing lol.
A day on some Proxes 4 and I quickly went back to Azenis or RA1's for daily.
Good tire for cruising around town, but definitely not a performance tire at all.

And the RA-1, which is an R compound track tire, is not a good choice for daily driving for anybody. Unless you really like replacing your tires every 5K miles, and having tires that don't do all that well in rain (especially as they wear).
well there gonna be mostly summer tires but like you said i do need them for a little bit in the winter time and for wet traction. but money wise im paying 350 for all 4 mounted balanced and a front 2 wheel alignment.
