Default What grade oil should I use?

So this seems like quite a simple question so I just want to poll some people out there as to what grade of oil you usually use. I have a '99 Accord EX-V6 and i use Castrol High Mileage 20w-50. My car has 146K on it. What is the different in the different grades of oil. If i use something liek 10-30 or 10-40, would i get any type of performance boost. What are the pros and cons of the different oil grades?

It's far from simple
One of the most helpful threads on oil here.
Based one that, use whatever is recommended for your car. It's stated on your oil cap.

id go for something close to 5w30 or even 10w30
no performance boost from oil but should cover daily driver wear and tear

Well, first off 140k is NOT high milage to a Honda.

I'm also of the opinion that you're sacrificing milage with the 20w-50.

In the New England area, where we see two/three weeks in the 90's and four to eight weeks in the 80's in the summer, I'd suggest 10w-40. In the winter, I use 5w-30.

The recommendation would be based on where you operate the vehicle.

holy god don't use 20w50. Use 5w30,10w30, or MAYBE 10w40. you are doing more hurt than good. The old theory that thicker oil is better is NOT true anymore. 20W50 flows less, and is less efficient at carrying away heat and preventing friction. It is way less fuel efficient. Too sticky of a oil for a car that it's not designed for. The machined tolerances in this motor are specifically meant for 5w30!!!!!!!!!!!!! 0W30 or 5W20 are great too.

Oh, Snap! 20w-50 in an Accord? I gotta go update my blog! What do you have a Mustang Shelby GT-500 engine under there??? (for the record these cars DO actually take 20w-50 lol)

Always follow your owners manual when it comes to fluid reccomendations. Chances are the manual knows what fluid your car requires, better than some old shmuck down the street workin at Grease-monkey's Tire and Lube that told you to fill her up with 20w-50 for that "high-mileage" honda you have...

Playing around with misc. oil viscosities can seriously damage the engine. As stated above, improper flow, heat/friction characteristics, longevity, efficiency, oil caking are all concerns to be delt with when the wrong oils are used in a particular engine.
