Default So it's NOT my main relay :(

Hey everyone... I posted here a while ago inquiring about my main relay in my 94 accord, as it seemed like that was my problem. The car doesn't want to start sometimes, it acts like I don't have the clutch pushed in (yes, 5 speed!) however after a bit it will fire right up! I purchased a new main relay and hoped my problem was fixed... WRONG! It still has the same issues!!! Any idea now what it could be?? PLEEEASE this is driving me insane! I can't even come home from work, park my car and then expect to be able to go to the grocery store 20 or 30 minutes later because my car wont start

You say it acts like clutch is not pushed in. Do you mean no starter action and it won't crank? When it does crank, does it sound like combustion is trying to happen while you are cranking it? I mean is it trying to fire up or just cranking with no indication of firing? Cold/cool weather problem? Warm weather problem or does it happen in any kind of weather? Is there a check engine light when it finally starts?

x2 on the clutch safety override switch.

This little number interupts the exciter circuit to the starter solenoid with the pedal released.
At rest, it is normally 'open' and only 'closes' when the pedal is depressed.
I suspect either someone's size 10 1/2 DD gunboats got up under the dash somehow (kicking loose the connector) or the switch just failed / broke.

it just doesn't do ANYTHING!! but now that you mention that P, the other day when it wouldn't start i got a little mad and kicked around under the dash and after a second it fired up!! what does the clutch safety switch look like? seems like this might be my culprit!!

nope! like I said it acts EXACTLY like if you were to put your key in the ignition, and turn it all the way to start without putting the clutch in. No check engine light after the car is running, and when I turn the key to on, I can hear the fuel pump engage.

OP- I had this same issues you describe,(except the kicking the dash part and it working again, lol) I basically replaced everything in my starting circuit trying to fix my symptom when it turned out it was the wire and connector going to the starter solenoid. I even replaced my ignition switch thinking that was the issue. What a PITA that was

I am having this issue right now and i already bought the ignition switch and have not installed it yet because for 1 im not sure how to install it, 2 not sure if that is the problem and 3 ever since i got the car 2.5 yrs ago i have to jimmy the key to get it started so the cylinder may be bad too and is what is causing the problem all of a sudden. Only problem is that the cylinder is $159 by itself and thats a little too much for me to spend if im not sure that thats what it is. When i turn the key with the clutch pressed all i get are my dash lights but no response from the engine not even a click. Now that you guys mentioned it ill check out and replace the clutch override switch for now and see what happens.

The problem is either the ignition switch contact assembly (electrical portion on the back of the cylinder), a bad clutch switch, or a failing starter.

The main relay won't stop the starter from cranking the engine; it only powers the fuel injection system.

http://www.helminc.com/helm/product2...7BS6MWA1JJA4R5

All the write-ups you'll ever need.

The ignition contact assembly for '94-97 Accords is Honda part number 35130-S30-003. Price is $42.48. You'll need two new break-away bolts (35102-SV4-003, $1.62 each) to reinstall the switch, unless you just want to use regular bolts instead.

real easy to ( test ) eliminate the clutch switch .. disconnect the switch at the pedal,, jump the 2 wires .. i believe ( blue/red and black/green ) together, if car starts every time, most likely you got a bad switch ..also first chk fuse # 9 , under dash fuse box 7.5 amps,, make sure that the connections are ok ( fits tight in the fuse box) and fuse is ok,,I am assuming since car starts at times that fuse cannot be blown ,,.. it could also be a starter relay going bad and acting up intermittently..starter relay is located under left side of dash, next to main relay .. it has 4 wires going to it....black,,black/white,, black/green,,white/red....
if clutch switch turns out to be ok,,

if you suspect the starter relay jump the white/red to black/white,, if it starts you got a bad relay

hope that helps..:-)

Starter relays rarely fail.

More likely to be the ignition contact assembly, the back-up limiter switch, or a bad starter.

Does the starter crank if you run power directly to it via a jumper?

Did the old starter behave in the same way?

Where did you get the starter and what brand is it?
