everytime i start my car now the rpm shoots to 2000 and stays there for a bit then slow dropps after about 2-3 mins and its been doing this just recently about 2-3 weeks ago and it wasnt doin this before and i was wondering what is causing this to happen and if it is normal??? thanks h-t!

 

What's your idle speed at normal operating temperature? Your idle air control valve (IACV) or your fast idle thermo valve (FITV) may need to be cleaned out. the IACV is located behind your throttle body, try that first. spray some carb cleaner into the holes and that should take care of most of the carbon build up in there. if that doesn't work, there is a thread somewhere that tells how to clean out a FITV, but many mechanics replace them because they're relatively cheap.

Idle up on start up is normal, my engine revs to 1.5-2k when i start it depending on temp, and i consider my engine to be running in tip top shape. If it warm idles @ 2k then you have a vac leak, otherwise just leave it alone.
